The Adams novel's in the 70's about the "Horse Clans" were one of my favorite fantasy book series. I was thinking of doing a Horse Clans figure with a Cat for my gaming table, but could not figure out if I should use a Viking/Barbarian figure or an armored knight figure? Mounted or on foot? The cover pictures always showed an armored figure but when reading I always pictured them more as Viking like. Your insights would be greatly desired.

I always thought they were more like Mongols. Lots of light horse archers with supporting armored cav.

Depends on time period.

While still on the plains they would be a short race wearing, at best, boiled, leather armor, riding small horses (ponies) with the "richest" tribe members having the same type leather armor on their mounts. They would be armed with bows, lances and sabres. The camp would be guarded by bow-armed old men, women and children.

Upon the "return to the LA" (actually the East coast of America) within a couple of generations the would be taller, heavier with larger, stronger horses (basically medieval). The regular troopers would be wearing chainmail and be on unarmored horses. The nobles and elite troops would be in full or 3/4 plate on armored horses.

And remember the Cats themselves, if time permitted could be outfitted with leather armor with metal spurs.

Bili the Axe was heavy armour on a huge warhorse.

I loved the Horseclans series. Have them all plus the GURPS supplement.

Adams was prescient in a way – the Ganiks are halfway to being real already – especially in their religious beliefs.

Shieldwolf miniatures have a figure with variations that is riding a big cat--check it out.

I LOVED those books. I have the GURPS supplement, which is great.

I enjoyed talking with Adams once or twice when I wrote the Bili the Axe supplement. He certainly knew and cared about his story universe.

Love those stories, waited years for them to get on Kindle. Now have them all on Kindle again. War Elephants for the win.
