Just trying to figure out any visual differences between the CV9030, 9035 and 9040 (other than the size of the gun!) and stumbled across the CV90 Armadillo, which seems to come in a couple of varieties:

I found:

"The superstructure is a design feature that provides additional room for the driver and vehicle commander as well as provided additional space for gear carried by the dismounts. Not shown in the pics….equipment specified by the customer. Remote weapon station, smoke grenade launchers, shot detection equipment, IED jammers etc…"

So it appears that these are two valid options for the Armadillo.

a) Do you want an Armadillo?

b) Would you want either/both options, or perhaps a selection of "equipment specified by customer" to do yourself (bearing in mind that a whole bag of bits including the raised superstructure would probably put the vehicle cost up).

So let me get this straight: they go to all the trouble of designing and building a low-profile vehicle and then have to fit a sun roof because they work out that the occupants bang their head's on the ceiling…?

a) No, I have no use for the miniature.

While it is a cool looking vehicle, my interests focus on the Cold War and vehicles that have been in service since. AN expanded line of Russian tanks, Cold War era infantry, and Vehicles for WG, France, and other smaller NATO armies would be of much greater interest.

You will be pleased to know that I have the PBV302 finished, the M114 (and M114 A2) aslmost finished and am well on teh way with the IKV91 then.

AN expanded line of Russian tanks

Don't think we can do much more in the way of Russian tanks for Cold War.

Vehicles for WG, France, and other smaller NATO armies

Want to send me a list?

Hi Geoff,

if I got things right you are doing those AFVs in 15mm – this is not my scale…but I would like to see a CV90 Armadillo, maybe I would even buy one or two in 15mm.

The idea to offer them with a bag of optional parts sounds very intriguing!

I am in the process of convertings some CV90 hulls made by GHQ into Armadillos:

Furthermore I did lots of research on the CV90, let me know if I can be of assistance. There are quite a lot of differences even within the Strf 9040 and CV9030 series vehicles, a lot more than just guns – esepecially when going into the details.

One note referring the comment on the superstructure. The CV90 Armadillo already has a slightly raised one, from the photos I would say roughly to the height of the rear-section which can be found on the CV9030 Mk.3 and CV9035 Mk.3 variants.
The Armadillo version which was offered to the Danish Army received a further raised compartment for the vehicle commander and RCWS.
The Norwegian STING and Multivogn/MultiC variants, which are the first in service vehicles with resemblance to the Armadillo, have a raised compartment added as well but this is different to that shown in the posted photos. The Norwegian variants have a raised compartment for the vehicles commander, the RCWS and so on and the raised rear known from the diverse Mk.3 variants of the AIFV.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Benjamin is one of the foremost experts on the CV90, Geoff! He could give you all sorts of insights.

Is anyone actually using the Armadillo yet?

I'd be game for a company or two of CV90s (both light tank and IFV versions).

If this is trying to design a hull for easy modification, well, I think you're limited to sharing the tracks between the variants.

GeoffQRF26 Nov 2015 12:18 a.m. PST

My original intention was just to produce the basic CV9030/35/40 for Sweden, Finland and Norway

@javelin98:

Thank you very much for the kind words Sir! This is highly appreciated. Btw any news from Shapeways?

@Geoff:

E-Mail is on its way.

@Lion in the Stars:

From my point of view yes. The CV90 Armadillo is a kind of Multipurpose Carrier and as stated earlier has already been shown in different versions.
The Norwegians recently received their first CV90 Stormingeniørvogn and CV90 Multivogn/Multicarrier (I found different designations) and those are CV90 with a layout and function very similar (design) if not identical (mission) to that of the prototype Armadillos. It should be noted that a number of CV90 Multivogn will be used as Armoured Mortar Carriers.

Just a sidenote referring to Geoff's last post.
No CV9035 needed if doing vehicles for Sweden, Finland and Norway.
When talking about AIFV versions the following are in use:

Strf 9040A/B/C with Sweden

CV9030N/NF1 and CV9030N Mk.3 (still have to check the exact designation for the latest version) with Norway. NF1 in some differing versions (with add-on armour, with rubberbelt-tracks…), also known as Stormpanservogn.

CV9030FIN which is a CV9030 Mk.2 variant

CV9030CH the Swiss version of the CV9030 Mk.2

CV9035NL the Dutch version of the CV9035 Mk.3, those were delivered with add-on armour which was later removed for peacetime duties. A number of vehicles has been sold to Estonia.

CV9035DK the Danish version of the CV9035 Mk.3, also known as IKK = Infanterikampkøretøj. Some were uparmoured for use in Afghanistan.

Cheers,
Benjamin

@MCV 80: OK, looks like it is needed for at least the Norwegians.

@Geoff: I'd be game for a few CV90/40s, including an AA variant.

GeoffQRF26 Nov 2015 2:35 p.m. PST

Is there an AA variant in service?

MCV 8027 Nov 2015 3:35 a.m. PST

Yes there is an AA variant in service, the Swedish have the Lvkv 9040 in two versions:

Lvkv 9040A (27 vehicles)
Lvkv 9040C (3 vehicles, one difference is the add-on armour)

chrisswim27 Nov 2015 10:21 a.m. PST

Ben has been great, providing some insight into CV90 and into XA-180. Although he is mean…. by that he corrected me. I put together a few 6x6 Xa-180 with ADATS. He said it was a Croatal AA for Finland as I recall. Burst my bubble.
