First its a new version of "The Magnificent Seven" headed by Tom Cruise, now I hear there is a "reboot" of the 1999 "The Mummy", again with Cruise. In the name of all that's Holy, what is he going to ruin next, "The Last of the Mohicans", "Tombstone", "Gunga Din"???

vtsaogames24 Nov 2015 7:42 p.m. PST

He did "The Last Samurai", how about "The Seven Samurai"?

Mako1124 Nov 2015 7:53 p.m. PST

It won't, since some/many can't come up with any original content.

platypus01au24 Nov 2015 7:55 p.m. PST

I can't see how it could even touch Sommers' version from 1999 with Fraser and Weisz.

Mako hits it. Original content is disappearing from TV and Cinema. Just seen two episodes of a new'ish BBC series "The Frankenstien Chronicles". Now how many versions and variants on this have there been in the past few years.

Likewise, just noted another miniseries "Jekyll & Hyde". Seems that everybody wants to jump onto the "re-invent the old classics for a new audience" band wagon.

The 1999 Mummy is one of my favorite films, and like Th eLast of the Mohicans and Tombstone, really cannot be improved on.

Pictors Studio24 Nov 2015 8:30 p.m. PST

Of course the 1999 Mummy wasn't an original concept either.

I think Hollywood is producing about as much original stuff as it ever has. They have always turned books and older movies into new movies.

nevals24 Nov 2015 8:39 p.m. PST

"The Hateful 8" and "The Ridiculous 6" are coming to the theatre near you. Actually, I think the later might be only at Netflix.

Patrick R24 Nov 2015 10:33 p.m. PST

Movies are a huge financial risk, but a few make enough of a bundle to keep trying. You soon reach a point where you're trying anything including voodoo to make sure there are bums on seats … That's why nobody's going to take a risk with original content and using a famous name or title might just pull a movie into the black.

Whatisitgood4atwork24 Nov 2015 11:35 p.m. PST

They're apparently remaking 'Memento' too. The original is only 15 years old and is a near perfect film, though not exactly a blockbuster.

Ewan Hoosami25 Nov 2015 3:24 a.m. PST

Pretty simple to me, just dont bother to pay to watch re-re-remakes or Tom Cruise films for that matter.

Bellbottom25 Nov 2015 4:06 a.m. PST

Isn't Tom Cruise the guy who has to stand on a box, and don't all his leading ladies have to wear flat shoes and walk in a trench?
Leading man?, As you colonials say, 'go figure?'

MHoxie25 Nov 2015 4:23 a.m. PST

Will Tom Cruise replace Joaquin Phoenix in the remake of "The Master"?

arthur181525 Nov 2015 4:32 a.m. PST

Jarrovian, those allegations were originally made about Alan Ladd.

Since films are all pretence and artifice anyway, what's such a problem about using trickery to make someone look taller or shorter (eg the dwarfs in LOTR and The Hobbit) than the actors are in real life?

Schogun25 Nov 2015 5:49 a.m. PST

Tom Cruise is the next Doctor Who.

Extrabio1947 Supporting Member of TMP25 Nov 2015 6:45 a.m. PST

Cruise, Travolta, and the rest of the Hollywood Scientology chowderheads could do a remake of Battlefield Earth. Ron would be so proud…

This. Leave it to a bunch of grumpy old gamers to complain about what has always been as if it is something unique to NOW. Heck, even Hitchcock remade a bunch of his own excellent movies decades later!

Can't wait to see Cruise in "Casablanca" and "Citizen Kane". Shouldn't be too long at this rate.

boy wundyr x25 Nov 2015 8:40 a.m. PST

I guess the good news is the the remakes are accelerating, they'll soon be leaving the real classics alone, and just be re-making what they made last year, then re-making what they made last month.

There are times when I don't mind re-makes/re-visionings, like Magnificent Seven is a high-end take on Seven Samurai (my favourite movie ever), but re-making Magnificent Seven just isn't going to work, no one can be McQueen cool and you had great and unique performances from Bryner, Wallach, and Bronson too.

LesCM1925 Nov 2015 8:49 a.m. PST

I must've missed "The Magnificent" and the sequels, "The Magnificent 2-6"

Bite your tongue!!!!

Dynaman878925 Nov 2015 11:07 a.m. PST

Next thing you know they will be doing a remake of "Romeo and Juliet"

Inkpaduta25 Nov 2015 11:34 a.m. PST

Actually, Yul Brenner was on the short side. He would push together dirt and stand on it next to some of the other actors in the movie to appear taller.

WarWizard25 Nov 2015 11:46 a.m. PST

After "Interview with the Vampire" it was all downhill.

Toronto4825 Nov 2015 12:03 p.m. PST

You are not forced to go to see any movie so save your money and spend it on minis

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP25 Nov 2015 1:11 p.m. PST

Honestly, I am trying to have some good natured, tongue in cheek fun ranting about movies. I know I don't (and probably won't) have to go and see anything.

Waco Joe25 Nov 2015 2:09 p.m. PST

"Point Blank" is apparently being remade, heavy on the CGI special effects.

sigh.

tberry740325 Nov 2015 8:26 p.m. PST

"Point Blank" HAS been re-made. Comes out Christmas.

… the remakes are accelerating, they'll soon be leaving the real classics alone, and just be re-making what they made last year, then re-making what they made last month…

…and they will be remaking movies BEFORE the original is made!

sumerandakkad14 Dec 2015 1:33 p.m. PST

Jekyll & Hyde is a slightly Steampunk version. It's not too bad

zoneofcontrol14 Dec 2015 5:27 p.m. PST

I hear TC is also starring in the new Movie/TV hybrid in post-production. It is a mash together of two giant hits from both forms of entertainment. He will be dual-starring as Rhett Butler and as Walter White in the 12 hour epic of "Gone With Breaking Bad Wind."

Hafen von Schlockenberg20 Dec 2015 9:45 a.m. PST

As a kid,I saw 300 Spartans and thought,"Someday they'll make a big-budget,highly accurate movie about Thermopylae".
Hahahahaha!!!

MarescialloDiCampo23 Dec 2015 10:15 a.m. PST

I'd like to see a remake of the French Colonel Chabert in English

per ardua26 Dec 2015 11:20 a.m. PST

I don't even know where Batman and Spiderman films are upto they seem to come out every other week.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP04 Jan 2016 5:45 a.m. PST

If they ever talk about a remake od die hard, staring cruise, I'll blow up the sun, to stop it from happening.

Hafen von Schlockenberg06 Jan 2016 11:33 a.m. PST

BTW, I believe there was a vocal minority pushing for TC for Aragorn.

Sauron, now…
