I always like, "Caen:Anvil to Victory" by Alexander McKee. It gives a superb descrition of the fighting partucularly around Caen until mid August from th British and Canadian perspective. Light on maps and picture but an easy and lasting good read overall. It details all the massive breakout attempts by the British, Canadians, US and Poles in fairly good detail. I first read it in high school and keep going back to it. I regret that to me, "The Clay Pigeons of St Lo"by Johns has summed up the US experience of Normandy until mid August for me. A personal account by a US company or battalion commander in the foghting in the bocage. "Six Armies in Normandy" another possibility. I forget the title by Carlo D'Este spcific to Normandy. |

All very good suggestions! I'd also add Campaign in Normandy by Carlo D'Este. |

Are you after an overall view of the campaign or for some specific part? All the above are all excellent books and the Clay Pigeons of St. Lo is a very interesting look at US Army small unit actions. For detailed descriptions of the US Army in Normandy try the US Army green books – excellent maps and some interesting photos. They can be purchased cheaply or even viewed on line for free. |

Robin Neillands' "The Battle of Normandy 1944" is the best by far of the many books on the campaign I have read. |

For an overall view of the Normandy Campaign 'The Penguin Atlas of D-Day and the Normandy Campaign' is an old one of mine that was only a tenner and has some great maps in it. For 'Wow' factor and for constant reference 'Panzers in Normandy' by Eric Lefevre is top of my list. I've also just got 'Goodwood – Over the Battlefield' by Ian Dalglish which has some amazing photos of the battle taken at the time. It has a lot of detailed analysis and clears up a few 'myths' as well. |

Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy by Max Hastings is my go-to book on the campaign. Reads very well. |

For amazing map and tactical gaming detail, the whole Battle Zone Normandy book series. |

I'd recommend this 'fiction based on truth' as excellent for period flavour. The author was the commander of a troop of tanks at 'Goodwood' link |
