Question for modern 'cold war' British Captains. Armed with stirling SMG, SLR or pistol? thanks Keith |

Guessing the answer is,it depends. Have seen all 3 being carried. Our Troop commanders and BK carried pistols most of the time (in the field), but that was because it was lighter. However in NI they carried rifles. Are you asking more about infantry officers? I think the answer would be a mix of SLR and SMG. But if want rear area troops then mostly pistols and SMGs if my time doing Div CPX is anything to go by |

Infantry types near the front would not want to be distinguishable from the rank and file…….but as stated personal preference or that of the CO would dictate which. |

Agreed – the odd Sterling's a good idea, but in general infantry officers like the whole "not standing out to snipers" thing, so tend to acquire a rifle…. |
