Last night, the HAWKs played a memorial "The Sword and the Flame" game to commemorate the passing earlier this month of the rules' author, Larry Brom. Many of the club members had not played the rules in over a decade, and for some of the younger members, this was their first exposure to the rules.
Buck Surdu and I GM-ed the game, and we chose to use the "Revision 1" version of the rules. The scenario involved a British column sent to capture a Pathan fort where "Wee Willie Winkie" was being held.
Everybody had a great time, and for this old wargamer it was a lot of fun to dust off this old set and run it again. Many of my formative wargaming years were spent playing these rules, and this was a nice trip down memory lane. For more photos, and the full write-up, please see my blog: link |

Great, Chris. We did the same last week with Italians vs Abyssinians. And we're doing a tribute game tonight with TSATF for the AWI. Cowpens! |

Chris and Buck, What a great AAR on your memorial TSATF "Wee Willie Winkie" game. Many thanks for remembering Dad in such a fitting manner. I shared with another TMPer recently that Christy and I volunteered with a regional community theatre for 15 years, designing, constructing & painting sets, handling costumes & make-up, lighting, props, sound, mostly anything needed back-stage. We did The Sound of Music over a 3 weekend run one time and while not my favorite, we had audiences in excess of 4000 people which was remarkable for us. One of the other volunteers told us that since The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959, that not a day has gone by where it isn't performed somewhere in the world. He was able to verify this, to my utter amazement. I'd like to think that TSATF may have the same track record. Dad would love it. |

Thanks for the kind remarks, everyone! Lori- Thank you for your post. I think your Sound of Music comparison may be very near the truth. It makes me think of the old colonial era phrase "The sun never sets on the British Empire", and how, with the world wide popularity of you Dad's rules, that the same could probably be said for TSATF. |

Very fun looking game and touching report, Chris, thanks for posting. I think I may be the other TMPer Lori referred to above, and that new phrase of yours: "THE SUN NEVER SETS ON THE SWORD AND THE FLAME" (rules) will now enter the lexicon -- or at least my own lexicon! |

I'm glad you enjoyed the report. And it's nice to hear you liked my new take on an old phrase. |
