Recently I decided, after painting many British and French troops of various scales, for various games, that I need to expand my Napoleonic history and paining into some new areas. So, I bought a box of the Warlord Vistula Legion with the intent of using this a start on a Polish LPE army.

I suspect, like may of you, a new army becomes the driver for new research into the who, what, where, and when etc. as well as collars 'n cuffs, buttons and the color that artillery was painted.

That being said, my first stop was Osprey. However, I found that there is one very old book (which is OOP but still available as PDF) on Napoleonic Infantry and one book on Polish Guard cavalry.

There is one review on Amazon with pans the book with one begrudged star calling out poor illustrations and historical errors in the text.

That leaves me here asking for advice on historical and uniform references for the Polish during the Napoleonic Wars that I can either obtain or access.

This one works for me.

The one mentioned above by jeffreyw3 is my standard go-to reference book for the Poles and Saxons.

The Nafziger book is good. Another good one is Orphan Eagles by Vincent Rospond.

W. J. Rawkins' guide to the Uniforms of the Army of the Duchy of Warsaw is available here: link

The book comes in PDF format on a CD. I've got his guide to the Army of Wurttemberg and it is full of detail, includes lots of colour illustrations and at £3.99 GBP I think represents excellent value for money. The books were originally published in the 70s and 80s but have been thoroughly revised for the new publication.

If you drop me a line via the contact page of the Murawski Miniatures website I'll send you my own uniform guide.

Murawski Miniatures,

Thanks--done!

How do Murawski Miniatures size up with Warlord miniatures?

I went to your webpage to respond as requested--Wow--I am impressed.

rmaker,

I order Orphan Eagles, I think it should be arriving today.

jefferyw3 & Redcurrent,

Thanks for spending my money--followed the link and ordered ;-)

I'm in real danger of succumbing to AMS (Advanced Modeler's Syndrome). That's related, but the same as, Completionist Compulsion.

AMS is a well known condition in the IPMS community whereby the modeler never starts a project for lack of enough references to ensure total accuracy.

+1 for helpfulness from Roger at Murawski and the usefulness of his guides.

After exchanging emails with my long time gaming buddy, Ed von HesseFedora, in SATX and Roger, I have discovered that they are very well acquainted.

Roger has been extremely helpful as has my personal Napoleonic history consultant, Ed von HesseFedora.

If your local library can do inter-library loans then see if you can get copies of Ryszard Morawski's books in the Wojsko Ksiestwa Warszawskiego series. They're in Polish, but have German, French and, in later books, English translations for the plates and chapter summaries. The plates are very detailed and they cover everything from basic uniforms to yearly changes. More importantly they also correct some common mistakes repeated through English-language books by drawing on existing examples of the uniforms, contemporary and near-contemporary portraits and surviving documentation (such as orders for clothing).

Note they don't cover everything- there's gaps in details for musicians, for example, but they are amazing (but expensive) reference works.

Cheers.

Dal.

Just had my first order back from Murawski. Very pleased with the figures and the turnaround, and thank you, Roger, for the uniform info too. The complete package.

IMHO, the figures are well up there with Perry and the latest from Front Rank. Recommended.
