Hi, has anybody some ideas what Vallejo colors to use for USAF SEA Cammo used in the Vietnam war. I'm settled with "Iraqui Sand (819)" as the light color and has tried "Olive Drab (889)" and as the dark one and "German Field Grey (830)" as the light. But those two colours just don't do it. I use the following references: picture picture Any suggestions?

Sorry, don't use Vallejo as much as I should so cannot help... Great looking Thud model in the first pic, though. Wild Weasels up! |

My Vallejo colour sheet has FS 595 conversions as follows: 34079 (Forest Green) 893 Verde Americano 34102 (Green OD) No match in the FS 595 list, but the Humbrol version is matched as 890 Verde Refractario (which is also given as a match for 34082!) 30219 (Tan) 874 Tierra Oscura 36622 (Light Gray for the undersides) 883 Gris Plateado HTH |

You might try taking a color print/photo to the local craft store, and match accordingly. They have a huge selection of colors, and prices are a $1.00 USD or less. |

Mark you might also keep your colors kind of faded and washed-out looking. I once saw an F-4 at an air show straight home from Nam which appeared to have 3 different shades of green due to fading. I know from my civil service days with the former Air Force Logistics Command (AFLC) that minor servicing write-ups by aircrew on a/c from South East Asia, in many cases, didn't get resolved until 1973! When you're being pressed to generate a/c for missions, alot of small things simply got put off. AFLC found out about this when flying hours were cut Air Force-wide due to the aftermath of the oil embargo of 1973. The a/c maintenance people had the a/c in their hands and didn't want to report they weren't busy lest their squadrons assign them to work in commisaries, white-wash tree, assist in blood drives, etc. So they looked at the aircrew write-ups and discovered so many complaints which hadn't been looked at in the 1960s. Even thoug flying hours set a record low, demand for parts set a record high! According to our expectations we were expecting a record low number of spare parts requests and were doing our repair work accordingly. True story. Jim |

Make sure to match the colors you want to the paint in the bottles, since their color charts appear to be significantly off, based upon some of the colors, and their respective paint chips as seen in the stores. |

I found the 890 Verde Refractario is too dark to contrast well with the 893 Verde Americano. I'm going to try a lighter shade of green. |
