… of the Aegean Sea, Greece.

"The Vickers Wellington bomber found in Sifnos Island at the Cyclades, Greece, is one of the few wrecks of its type -if not the only one- that is preserved in such an excellent condition.

Another forgotten page from the years of World War II was discovered thanks to the efforts of a team of Greek divers who located and identified the wreck of a Vickers Wellington British bomber, which ditched in the Aegean back in 1943.

Nicolas Vassilatos, Lena Tsopouropoulou, Antonis Chatziantoniou, Sarantis Malafouris, George Karelas and Konstantinos Milionis, dove and photographed the best preserved wreck of its type worldwide…"

My dad said the 'Wimpy' was "the kite that won the war".

He was RAF bomber command ground crew in WW2 so I paid attention to his perspective on this sort of thing when he spoke (on the few occasions he did).

Glad they found such a rare bird in such a condition.

I was intrigued by the 'kite that won the war' comment.

Could you elaborate on why your father said this. I would have expected Lancasters to get the glory.

Lanc's did get the glory but the Wimpy did a lot of the hard graft.

Even though I don't entirely agree with John T's father, while respecting him and all his comrades, I can understand where he is coming from. Wellingtons flew from beginning to end, not just in Bomber Command but in Coastal Command. They also flew in the Middle East and Far East. In fact in the dark days of 1940-42 the Wellington pretty much carried the weight of the UK's heavy bomber force.

I'm sure you are rightly very proud of your Dad. I for one feel it is to our countries shame that it took so long to get them the memorial they so richly deserved, and then only after most of them were no longer here to see it.
