Panzer Flats

Has anyone use these? How to they look?

I really want to get into WW2 mini gaming, but my funds are limited and honestly, painting, terrain making, etc…doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Can anyone here recommend a site that sells Panzer Flats and maps/terrain pieces for Panzer Flats?

Thanks

Panzer Flats is available on WargameVault:

Another option would be looking at the "Top Downs" on the Junior General site:

If funds are limited but time and printer ink is not, Junior General is your friend. (see zoneofcontrol's link above)

I know you have posted several times before with regards to your journey of trying to get a WWII game onto the table without the 'work' and cost that actually goes into that.

I feel that over time, you are increasingly describing a boardgame rather than a miniature game and so think that at this moment in time, looking at viable boardgames is seriously worth your time.

There is a lot of choice for world war two tactical and they are very pleasing to the eye and most have a collectable element to them, so you can expand your interest over time.

I would conduct your research over at boardgamegeek dot com

some titles that may be of interest are;

Advanced Squad Leader STARTER KIT 1

Memoir '44 (mixes figures with hexes)

Band of Brother / Ghost Panzer (new editions are about to be released in the next few months with new boards etc – but a second hand Ghost Panzer might be cheap now, but don't get a Band of Brothers as the rules changed and the counters are out of date until the next module has update counters).

Heroes of the Pacific – a new release from the Lock 'n Load series, (quite detailed for a new player, but worth the investment of time to get into)

Le Bataille de France (One level up from squad action, units are platoons and the East front edition is out early next years)

Conflict of Heroes (big lovely boards and counters, with a programmed system of learning, so you learn the rules bit by bit as you advance through the scenarios – do not get the 1st edition of Awakening the bear, the rules and counters have changed with everything that follows)

Tank on Tank (a fun game from Lock 'n Load, there are new east and west front versions out, light in nature, but easy to play).

anyway, I am sure that others can add to the list, but I feel the boardgames will give you the sort of game you want, while looking good and professional. There is a lot of variety in terms of complexity out there.

I wrote an article a while ago that compared some tactical games ago and it may interest you as it describes some fundamental aspects of board gaming. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

There is a big buzz around conflict of heroes at the moment because Academy Games have just brought out the solitaire module and firefight generator.

they will be doing the Kursk re-print over the next few months and then after that is Guadalcanal.

Also look at the board game called Tide of Iron. It plays very well. If you go to boardgame geek you can find lots of info about it.

If you buy the Heroes of Normandy board game, which is quite fun to play IMO even though it uses a grid, you can also use the counters for miniature games because the game is scaled out for 15mm. All the vehicle counters are 15mm. The infantry are squads. Nice thick counters as well. If you are in the USA, you can mail order it discounted from coolstuffinc.com/page/748 Base game is $45 USD, but is all you really need.

If you want more of a Hollywood take on things, have a look at Heroes of Normandie.

You have to give the FoH sample files time to load. May take 15-30 seconds to show up.

To me miniatures are not a necessity to play a wargame. I prefer miniatures but use junior generals for flat figures and vehicles they are perfectly adequate if you put them on the right sized base. Look on Wargamesvault for us Manoeuvre Group and look at our card buildings for ideas, Make your buildings from cereal packets. Use their folds no you own as your own creases will break any a pint on them. Spray paint the card first to stop it distorting. You can also download some free card building images. To me at least it's about the game not the miniatures are a means to an end not an end in itself. For trees draw flat tree shapes and sort them half way down on half and half way up on the other and make them into a cross. Use enough and they are perfectly acceptable for a game. Pans cruisers for hedges and you are well on the way. I have seen some Excellent free WWII paper vehicles but they are more work. Main thing is have fun.

We played Crossfire for a while, using photos of various soldiers and troops printed out, cut to the size of a base and then fixed to cardboard.

If you laminated them, it could be a pretty durable solution too for very little cost.
Need a new tank for a scenario? Print a photo from wikipedia and voila.
