Blooming Mamelukes. These, from Gringos40, are even better figures than the Gendarmes d'Elite but, having finished the officer (and only the officer), I somehow think the troopers will mostly be in the later French style colours…as easier to do! Still leaves the band and especially the kettledrummer. The lighting for this photo is harsh and has taken out much of the highlighting. Once he is based with the trumpeter, I may try daylight instead. If you follow the link to other photos you will also see the much larger figure by Andrea, which I used as inspiration, but knew I could not get near that standard!
imageshack.us/a/xFF4/1 Dumb question. You cannot fail to notice the powdery finish of the white horse and the rider's sleeves. I have used Citadel, Humbrol and this is Vallejo, all acrylics. This was layers of white over an early black wash, on a sprayed white base. It never comes out right. Expert help please! |

the white horse skin looks quite good, wouldn't change it, about the black parts on the leg – shhoud start above the joint and end beneath it, really only at the "outside" – so rear legs especially for skin, you opted for a quite dark one, Mamelucks often were quite fair skinned – great model full of character. |

Yes, absolutely right according to every reference I have checked. I've been doing that wrong for ages I now see………I'll fix that before basing. Also only just noticed that mark below the horse's left eye. The black pupil I filled in this morning and added a glaze….must have run! Thanks all. His complexion is the dregs of my Tallarn Flesh with Ogryn Flesh wash. When they run out…………oh dear. |

Thanks indeed. The French mamelukes are done, just three of them! I am working on the wheatfield, one strand at a time…..sad really. Good job the base is small…. |

This weekend……..a quiet day today and I produced about 250 stalks. This is sad, I know, but easily done in an hour if you stick at it. Three Mamelukes…French……"dull" colours (I love them for that as more challenging than the obvious bandsmen etc) in a wheatfield. I'll show you and see if you think it works. 'er indoors is not convinced. I do tend to overdo the bases and (she is good at such things) she keeps telling me to keep it simple, as it can overwhelm the figures. It is like scale for colours and uniform/identical figures if 12 men are to look like a regiment. I am still new to this……… |

Tell you what. I have had a crap day. We are 4-0 down to Spurs with 10 mins to go…and I spent the whole morning doing the wheatfield. Everyone agrees it simply has not worked…….. It is is genius. It took a massive effort…..it should be brilliant. Every single ear of wheat is a masterpiece….But, in the end, it does not work…I am still learning here. I will photo separately, as a new topic. When it all goes wrong, when you tried too hard………..We never show our disasters…I will. I spoilt these Mamelukes by overdoing the bases. These are brilliant figures. My painting is as good as I can do. But I overdid the concept of the basing…………actually, could be well worth showing. Easy to show our triumphs….sometimes artistic judgement is what is needed….'er indoors said I was overdoing it…but would I listen? |

Don't despair Deadhead……….as you know dedication is the key ..be it supporting West Ham as we both do and making wheatfields……not much time for the latter as New Figures beckon ……..!! looking forward to the photos regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com
