Me and my friend tried our first game of Kings of War today. Neither of us had played before and we just created armies out of what figures we had. My friend had an elf army (GW figures mostly) and I had Orcs ((very old Ral Partha and Grenadier figs). We had no idea what we were doing, so the elves were mostly in 5 and 10 man units while my orcs were all in 10 and 20 man units. The point totals of the armies were equal.

I crushed the elves! Just rolled right over them with my bigger units.

So our first lesson learned: Use BIG units if you can! They are more powerful, survive longer and cost fewer points per figure.

Next game I will try some 40-figure units :)

Oh, and we liked the rules!

The larger units do have a better staying power in the game although the smaller more fragile units are a bit more flexible in manoeuvre and able to get into flanks and behind into the rear lines. It really is a good game . I've found a mixed unit army works well ,solid core troops in centre protected by skirmishing units on flanks and front , doesn't matter what race and it always seems to work . Having an even mix allows for allot of choices on the table too . Don't forget those flyers ( big or small ) , they are invaluable if you can take some. Welcome to the KOW throng . cheers Tom

Those seem to be the same lessons that I learnt this week. No more detachments of bowmen, they are going to merge with the regiments to form hordes. I need to find my old Chaos Knight on a griffon to be the new general.
