how is the best way to base Ranger figures for 10mm Lord of the Rings type games? Do I base them as single figures or as an archer unit on a 20mm X 40mm base? Thank you for your help.

If you are using Warmaster, only character models are individually based. I'd class Rangers as archers, but another alternative would be medium cavalry, since they may have been mounted at the Pellenor Fields.

If troops, yes as a 20x40 three stand unit. If as a named hero (Strider, Faramir), then as a single fig (or a small grouping of 3-4) on a 20mm dia. disc.
If as a general (Aragorn at the Black Gate), then Warmaster convention is a single 20x40 stand. The later Battle of the Five Armies system, however, mounts generals identical to heroes, that is on a 20mm disc.. Not sure if this was for versatility in the game (so that the included heroes could also be generals and vice versa) or because the original Warmaster basing scheme produced too large of a footprint for the general.

Actually, in Warmaster all characters can be on a disc up to 25mm (1", near enough) in diameter, or on a standard 40x20mm base. You can go larger than that, but would need to measure command radius from the leader figure itself.

Parzival, are you referring to something in Warmaster Ancients or something? I've never heard of that 20mm for characters vs 40mm bases for generals rule.

I possibly am misremembering, largely because the armies depicted in the rulebook were based along those lines; generals on 20x40, heroes on 20mm discs. I did seem to recall that in WM the command radius could be measured from the base edge, but I'd have to look that up.

I'm not sure about Warmaster Ancients, but for both Warmaster (fantasy) and The Battle of Five Armies spin-off, command stands definitely can be up to 25mm in diameter, not 20mm. This happens to be the approximate size of a British 2 pence coin (and the rulebook even shows command figures being based on 2 pence coins).

Command radius is always measured from the edge of the base, unless the base is more than 25mm in diameter.
