You are in the shoes of the dictator/prime minister of Greece Ioannis Metaxas. Its 3:00 AM and the ambassador of the Kingdom of Italy has just given you an ultimatum that demands that you permit Italian troops to enter Greece and occupied unspecified strategic position or face war. Do you: 1) Reject the ultimatum and accept war (historical outcome) 2) Accept the ultimatum 3) Request more time for the decision 4) Offer an alliance 5) Resign and let someone else deal with it |

1 I'd avoid the sneak attack because it would be unlikely to have decisive affect and being able to pose as the innocent victim has some diplomatic heft at the start of hostilities. |

Weigh up the likelihood of besting a country (based on current populations) with 10 times more people and a much larger and better equipped war machine. Do I defend the entire country or just defensible areas. Weigh up the impact on the population of fighting. Not forgetting is the country behind a war? What friendly forces can help out? I suspect resistance was never a great option. Probably 2 with an evacuation of as many who would and could do so. |

Call Turkey and ask them if they'd like to use the Italians for practice with them for their next war. |

Mobilize immediately and play for time, to get foreign assistance, if any can be had. |

3. Delay the inevitable invasion for as long as possible while the army mobilises. |

1 Even if the Greeks had chosen to withdraw, there wasn't time to notify the front line units before the Italians crossed the border. I doubt Metaxas could have remained in office if he'd done anything other than reject the Italian demands. Grelber |
