If ever you find yourself in Liverpool drop into the White Star pub, just 5 mins walk from the Town Hall, and enjoy a pint in the back room surrounded by wood panelling, smoked glass and dozens of pictures of famous ships including several of the Alabama, Shenandoah and Florida

My historical reenactment group (HMS) where invited to do bring our 22ft launch to be part of an reenactment of the surrender of the Shenandoah in the Albert dock last weekend, we are sorry it fell through as the organizers got cold feet, we think it my have had something to do with the Confederate battle flag and the Slavery museum at the Albert dock.

The weekend was not all a loss I was able to show my friend around this great city, Museums, Galleries and it's stunning buildings, including St George's hall "Weeping Window of Poppies" very moving.

That's sad – Merseyside's connection with the Confederacy has more to do with an independent spirit and a desire not to be governed by a remote assembly than any support for its philosophy. Once Lincoln made his emancipation proclamation in 1863 public opinion in the UK quickly turned against the South. Charles Adams noted that after that the South had few friends in London.

But to forget the role of Merseyside in the Civil War is to misunderstand the context and the time and is a misguided attempt at political correctness. We should not mold history in our image, but understand it for what is.

I may side with the Union but I can understand and respect the Confederacy's stance. It was not as black and white as has been portrayed since.

"In Mersey channel she went then
Roll Alabama roll
And Liverpool gave her guns and men
Oh, roll, Alabama roll!"
