"In a franchise where seven actors have played the protagonist, the thing that makes each James Bond film truly memorable is the antagonist. As the main villain in Spectre, which opens in U.S. theaters Friday, Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz enters an elite fraternity of weirdos. When it comes to Bond's enemies, it's not so much actors portraying characters as characters forged according to a type. There are a few criteria that make up the archetype of the Bond villain. Using these as an informal guide (except when ignoring them entirely), it's possible to determine the greatest villains of them all…" Main page link By the way, who you consider was the best? Henchmen are actually more memorable than the main villains. Jaws. Tattoo, Oddjob… |

Bald with cat, sat in huge leather chair (or with a bald cat) idiotic henchmen in builders hard hats with 70s British Army weapons. Gorgeous assistant who ends up dying. And most importantly, a really complex or lengthy method of killing Bond, giving him a chance to escape, when a bullet to his head would have been ideal. |

In fact, it is the white Persian cat who is the evil mastermind, as he appears in many of the films. The humans are merely his henchmen and minions… |

In the books, there were only two antagonist organizations: SMERSH and SPECTRE. Even in the latest motion picture, organizations like Quantom was but a subset of SPECTRE. SMERSH of course was part of the Soviet intelligence organization and SPECTRE and independent crime and terrorism for profit organization. Goldfinger was suspected of working for SMERSH, although he had private enterprises as well. Mr. BIG worked for SMERSH, Dr. No for SPECTRE. However keeping to the original stories and with the The Spy Who Loved Me and perhaps the short stories, everything is tied to the operation of these two organizations. I am not infallible so there could be exceptions, but I doubt many. |

The ability to goad Bond into doing ridiculously dangerous things and to turn down official help while doing them.
The canny to give him just enough gear to get him into deadly situations, but not enough to get him out.
