"Moscow's intervention in Syria has put Russian forces on Israel's doorstep. Though Israel and Russia have set up a hotline to avoid any conflicts, there remains a possibility--however remote--that Israeli and Russian forces may clash.

It won't be the first time. During the War of Attrition between Israel and Egypt in the early 1970s, Soviet pilots supporting Egypt engaged in dogfights with Israeli jets, only to see the vaunted MiGs blasted out of sky.

This time might be different.

So what might a Russian-Israeli conflict look like? It is actually easier to say what such a conflict would not look like. It would not be a war because there is no reason for war: Russian and Israel do not have territorial designs on each other, neither is out for regime change, and both have nuclear weapons. A Russian war with Israel would inevitably drag in Israel's big brother, the United States…"

it could happen.

Mako1107 Nov 2015 8:34 a.m. PST

Yes, it could, but I think it is unlikely.

Stryderg07 Nov 2015 10:12 a.m. PST

A few bombs 'accidentally' dropped in the wrong places, a few dog fights due to 'mis-identified' aircraft. Maybe.

Winston0107 Nov 2015 10:31 a.m. PST

That is a real stretch. A lot of things would have to go wrong for it too happen. Israel got along more or less with the former national government or at least had a arrangement with him. I don't see Israel getting involved and if the Russians are helping to prop him up they are most likely for that. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
I just don't see the them getting sucked into a protracted conflict with each other.

Russian pilots aren't that good. Their air time is well below western or Israeli pilots.

When ISIS gets jet fighters there will be a chance. Till then an accidental flights into the wrong air space will probably just be escorted out of air space. Now US and Russian aircraft over Syria or Iraq is a possibility.

Bangorstu08 Nov 2015 12:50 a.m. PST

Cyrus – maybe, but Israel has few foreign friends and Russia has a bigger navy….

If a few Russian planes get splashed, I think the Israelis could easily lose a ship or two.

Or Russia simply announces the *cough* inadvisability of merchant ships visiting Israel until Netanyahu learned some respect.

Cyrus the Great08 Nov 2015 10:18 a.m. PST

Russia has a bigger navy

And…
Let's say the Russians dispatch a ship or two from their fleet about USS Liberty size.

@Cyrus the Great

"Let's say the Russians dispatch a ship or two from their fleet about USS Liberty size."

Israel is unprincipled but not stupid.

Begemot

Israel is not unprincipled, just because you may or may not like their principles. They actually hold to their principles far better than most western democracies.

Howler11 Nov 2015 9:20 p.m. PST

Not principled? Quite the opposite I'd say.
