Tool Bench Hardware Painters Tape

Why do wargamers need painters tape, and is the dollar-store variety good enough?

As I get ready to depart for Fall In I began to wonder how many members have hosted games at various conventions. Many, in fact most, of the games reflect an astonishing amount of work on the part of the folks putting them on.

Full disclosure: I have hosted games in the past and will in the future.

Winston Smith06 Nov 2015 7:52 a.m. PST

I hosted a few. GASLIGHT and Fire and Steel.

Darkest Star Games Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Nov 2015 7:55 a.m. PST

Tons, even before I got "into the biz". Mostly Vietnam games, but also some sci-fi and WW2.

PzGeneral06 Nov 2015 8:03 a.m. PST

I run games at the local shows. I even took my Rorke's Drift stuff to Bushy Run this summer….didn't need it though. When I go on the road to shows, I go to play with other people's toys….

Matter of fact, I'm running 3 games at Ft. Meigs "World at War" tomorrow…..

nazrat06 Nov 2015 8:03 a.m. PST

Almost every con I go to. Occasionally I take a break from it, but the whole time I am there I am wishing I was running something…

Stan Johansen Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Nov 2015 8:04 a.m. PST

Many Modern jihad and Road Rage post apocalyptic games at Historicon, Fall In, Cold Wars, Recon and Hurricon in Florida. I always have a great time putting them on.

Ragbones06 Nov 2015 8:24 a.m. PST

I've run several but not in a long time.

MajorB06 Nov 2015 8:31 a.m. PST

I have hosted games in the past and will in the future.

Tommy2006 Nov 2015 8:49 a.m. PST

Several. GhenghisCon, KubalCon, PacifiCon, GamesCaucus and others.

If I can make a Con in driving distance I try to put on at least one session

Phrodon06 Nov 2015 8:58 a.m. PST

More times than I can count in dozens of cons in North America. I actually prefer hosting a game than playing in a game.

Cyrus the Great06 Nov 2015 9:02 a.m. PST

I have.

TMPWargamerabbit06 Nov 2015 9:22 a.m. PST

Almost every year at HMGS-PSW since 1988 and the occasional Strategicon event (3 times per year) at LAX.

20mm FOW…. yes you can see the miniatures across the 20x6 table. Twenty player games.

Napoleonic historical scenarios from 1796 to 1815.
Wings of War/Glory
28mm Clash of Empires ancients with the big scenario game format (historical armies and terrain instead of points and open fields)

Frequent winner of "Best of Con" trophy awards.

Once (with a shite load of help); The Mazzengaville game at Little Wars 2014.

Tom Reed06 Nov 2015 9:29 a.m. PST

Yup, usually at my local con, Winter War. I usually run 2-3 games, one of which is always Desperado.

Bismarck06 Nov 2015 9:35 a.m. PST

I had a run of 7 years in a row at our local con until some health issues got in the way. Its been several years, but now if health improves will get back to doing some GMing. It had been 5 years until this past Southern Front that I had even been able to attend.

Loads….with the lads from BGS

I've hosted a few, at a couple of con's. Not an expert, by any means, but not totally green either. Cheers!

CLDecker06 Nov 2015 10:11 a.m. PST

Way back when, Williamsburg Muster and all.

olicana06 Nov 2015 10:14 a.m. PST

I usually do two or three a year.

DontFearDareaper Fezian06 Nov 2015 10:16 a.m. PST

I used to host games all the time. Been slacking off the last few years on that score. Running some Kings of War demo games and a mini-tournament at MillenniumCon this weekend. Mayhaps I'll get my hosting mojo back after this con.

Only at very small cons, but I think I get to count my Aliens Board Game made three D.

Copied from a fellow at Genghis Con.

I will say, all admiration to the folks who can either make one of the BIG productions, or repeat year-after-year-after…

Forget about the people who do both.

RavenscraftCybernetics06 Nov 2015 10:46 a.m. PST

I have run gaslight and xwing

sillypoint06 Nov 2015 10:51 a.m. PST

Combat Colours06 Nov 2015 10:55 a.m. PST

DisasterWargamer Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2015 11:16 a.m. PST

When I have time enjoy hosting – Died for Glory or Fire and Fury – and the occasional Colonial game

Working on some AWI and Crimean areas for the future

Rich Bliss06 Nov 2015 11:26 a.m. PST

Always. It's my main activity in the hobby these days.

I enjoy hosting games at CONS, and I do it because it will get me in for free. I do Pacific-con, Kublacon, and now that i moved to the Sacramento area where they seem to have a lot of smaller cons i plan to host when i do go.

i usually do something set in the dark ages, because that's my biggest collection. lately with Lion Rampant and Hail Ceasar, though i've also used Dux Britianarrum and Bring of Battle.

ubercommando06 Nov 2015 11:39 a.m. PST

I have. I quite liked the prep and testing out the game beforehand, the shows I remember being mixed experiences. At every one you get an earful from someone being negative but you have to remain diplomatic. Either someone doesn't like the rules you're using (if they're a commercial set) or else they have issues with the period your game is set in (especially 20th century games).

Would I run one again? Sure.

zippyfusenet06 Nov 2015 11:47 a.m. PST

I have in the past. Have slacked off for a while, but hope to find more time for the hobby in general in upcoming months and years. I'll have to get off these goldurn internet message boards first, though.

John Armatys06 Nov 2015 11:48 a.m. PST

I've been running games at selected UK shows as part of Wargame Developments Display Team (North) since 1993. I suspect that we will carry on until we get too old to travel or run out of ideas for a new game.

Mako1106 Nov 2015 12:28 p.m. PST

I have as well, but it's been a while since I've been to a convention.

David Manley06 Nov 2015 12:36 p.m. PST

Many over the last 25 years, mostly naval.

My "Stingray" game was my most recent

Scafcom1 Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2015 12:46 p.m. PST

GQ3 naval games at SF Bay Area conventions for several years running. No plans to stop doing this as I am having too much fun.

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian06 Nov 2015 1:24 p.m. PST

I've hosted a few at Cold Wars and Fall In. No Historicon.

McWong7306 Nov 2015 1:33 p.m. PST

There aren't cons like you get in the US and UK, Aussie cons games are usually tournaments. Spent the best part of six years running FoW tournaments, nearly burnt me out of the entire hobby!

Personal logo Virtualscratchbuilder Supporting Member of TMP Fezian06 Nov 2015 1:33 p.m. PST

I have.

vdal181206 Nov 2015 1:34 p.m. PST

I have hosted games at conventions in Canada

wrgmr106 Nov 2015 1:45 p.m. PST

Yes, lots. At our local convention and Enfilade, the NHMGS one in Olympia Washington.
Our group did Ligny and Waterloo, battalion level, 25/28mm, Shako 2 games on 18 ft tables. We always put several games on at each, 6 this year at our local Vancouver con.

Old Contemptibles06 Nov 2015 1:46 p.m. PST

I have.

Grelber06 Nov 2015 1:54 p.m. PST

I have run two or three Pig Wars games. Good fun, always an opportunity to add a touch of whimsy to the game. I'd like to do more games in the future, especially games for young 'uns. I've just been rather burnt out from work for the past several years.

Hi John,
I was in your Tuyuti game at Historicon a few years ago! In the 1980s, I was a part owner of Stone Mountain Miniatures and ran games at 7 Origins using our figures. However, at the last 12 Historicons, I go to play and bring back ideas for the Colorado Military Historians gaming club in Denver.

Sir Walter Rlyeh06 Nov 2015 2:03 p.m. PST

I do smaller cons and have done Dragoncon, Origins, Gencon, and now am doing Historicon.

MacDuff06 Nov 2015 4:01 p.m. PST

About 50 games over the last 20 years at 6 different cons (more years at Cold Wars). About 2/3 of those with a co-host

general btsherman06 Nov 2015 4:14 p.m. PST

I have…. Once.

21eRegt06 Nov 2015 5:06 p.m. PST

Used to a lot, then stopped for many years, now at it again.

GenWinter06 Nov 2015 5:27 p.m. PST

I put on 2 or 3 games at Tacticon and Genghis Con every year. Gets my figures out on the table and sometimes I meet new local gamers which is always fun. On the other hand, sometimes the players don't seem to engage very well but that does not discourage me.

Gonsalvo06 Nov 2015 6:27 p.m. PST

I can't think of a convention I attended where I gave not run a game. I usually run at least 3 games at Historicon, and have done up to six on several occaissions.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2015 6:38 p.m. PST

I used to do quite a few.
