Hi, I'm planning a Dark Age skirmish project using 15mm figures, and can't choose between 15mm bases (less intrusive, allows for tighter ranking up) and 20mm bases (more stable?). I'm wondering if people have found that the smaller 15mm bases are unstable on a flocked gaming mat? Cheers, Christopher |

20mm with a bit more heft than wooden bases … but rather more difficult to get in Finland. ;) |

I use 19mm (Canadian pennies), sometimes nickels when I need a couple more mm for cavalry. |

Pennies are the norm but I have actually come to enjoy larger bases for the increased stability, especially with metal figures in weird poses. |

I've based 15mm ww2 on 15mm bases; they do feel a bit small sometimes. |

The euro 10 cent coin is just under 20mm, and the 5 cent coin is just over 20mm, so I suppose those might be good options. Ordering them from Litko costs 10 (USD) cents plus postage anyway. I wish I could get the 16mm 1 euro cent coin, but they don't use them in Finland. |

US Pennies – cheap, you can get 100 for a dollar. |

Between 12mm – 18mm are good options. A shame our pennies aren't made of ferrous metals, to work with magnets. |

I use $.01 USD US pennies. |

Canadian pennies were erratically made of ferrous metals (some work with magnets, some don't), but we dropped the penny 3-4 years ago, so they're an endangered species for game bases! I should have enough for life, thanks to being lazy about sorting out my spare change cups, but I've already sorted out the ferrous ones and they aren't going to last past my 6mm WWII and moderns. |

I use 5/8" washers with magnets. I made a post about it. link Guys on the left on US Pennies, Guys on the right 5/8" washers.

You mentioned Dark Age skirmish. Go with smaller bases so the Shieldwall will look more convincing. |

I guess there is one of us in every crowd… I use 1/2" square metal to individual base for my 15mm WWII skirmish. |

Thanks for the feedback and advice – the washers & magnets method is very nice! |

I bought hundreds of. Washers from a hardware store going out of business so they cost me less than a penny. I use the penny sized washers for 15mm. |
