This is sad news indeed Sword and the Flame got me started in the hobby and never let it go a classic and so was he. We will raise our classes this weekend at Fall In in his honor. Rest in peace.

Florida Tory04 Nov 2015 7:38 p.m. PST

Sad news. I am sorry for your loss. Your Father's contributions to the hobby were enormous.

Deepest sympathy for your loss.

Like many others, "The Sword and The Flame" was one of the first rule sets I ever played decades ago. It contributed to my love of gaming in general and Colonials in particular.

TheKing3004 Nov 2015 8:30 p.m. PST

I'm terribly sorry for your loss….

Larry was a brilliant star in our hobby. One of my first miniatures games was Sword and Flame and I passed on the tradition by playing the game with my two sons. Thanks for all the fun you provided for us Larry – RIP

mumbasa04 Nov 2015 9:38 p.m. PST

My thoughts and prayers are with Christy and Lori. My friend Terry and I will play another battle in our Zulu campaign we started in 1980 and raise a glass to Larry. RIP

My deepest condolences to Lori and Christy. Larry was a fine man and a role model to us all.

My sincere condolences for your loss. I met Larry when he attended a Milwaukee Historical Wargame Weekend along with Lynn Bodin. Larry played in a TSATF Siege of the Taku Forts game unbeknownst to the hosts. Larry had a great time and the hosts were told AFTER the game. They said that if they'd known, they probably would've been too nervous to run the game.

It's with great sadness that I post this.Lori and Christy our family's thoughts and prayers are with you. Over the many years our group has played TSATF we never had a bad game only bad dice! Larry's rules brought together many people for a lot of fun. The epic battles are retold by those still with us. Larry joins many gamers who have gone over the hills and far away! I bet he is in the middle of a TSATF game right now! Roll high Larry!

Naturally, my condolences to family and friends. Like many I never met Mr. Brom. I may have moved on from the rules – though I will play when others run them – but they got me back into gaming in the mid-eighties and I'm still going strong thirty years on.

Perhaps a special tribute is in order: some one, perhaps more than one, manufacturer needs to create a figure (or a pack) in his honor with Himself as the principal figure. I bet it would sell quite a few units. And I do hope in at least 25/28 and 15/18 mm.

While he deserves the many honors, within the hobby is that not a special high honor? And who deserves it if not Mr. Brom?

Very sorry to hear of your loss, Lori and Christy.

Condolences on your loss. We run a demonstration wargame each year at a local show. Last years one was the most popular and thoroughly enjoyed, playing TSATF, Zulus. His legacy will live on.

Sorry to hear of this. He will be missed.

Nick Pasha05 Nov 2015 3:46 a.m. PST

Those of us lucky enough to have known Larry will miss him. The best way to honor him is to keep gaming, which is what he would want us to do.

Played in a Franco-Prussian war game at Southern Front back around 2005. It was a blast. I didn't realize it until afterwards that Larry had been the GM. True gentleman and a wonderful person.

Deepest condolences.
RIP.

Lori and Christy, your father was a great and wonderful man who will be missed by many. His set of rules was the first wargame I ever played back in the 70s and I'm still playing. He gave countless numbers of gamers a great wargame! I'll never forget him!

MaleGriffin05 Nov 2015 8:54 a.m. PST

My sincerest condolences on your loss.

TSATF is still my favorite rules system after playing it the past thirty six years. I used TSATF to introduce wargaming to dozens of new players.

Larry will be sorely missed. The hobby has lost an icon.

Rudysnelson05 Nov 2015 10:13 a.m. PST

This has been a real bad and sad year for our industry/hobby.
It is hard to hear that another close friend and stalwart of the gaming community has died. My heart is broken for the family.

battleeditor05 Nov 2015 10:22 a.m. PST

Sincere condolences.

Rarely is an individual so recognisably connected with a single period of historical gaming, but there can't be a colonial gamer anywhere who has not, even in passing, heard of "The Sword and the Flame" and its affable and authoritative author.

We will remember him.

Lori & Christy, My sincere condolences for your loss. I'll always remember fondly all the games with your Dad over the nearly 40 years since I first met all of you in Jackson. I know that all the responses on this forum should tell you how much he was loved.

You have our deepest condolences. Larry was responsible for getting me back into wargaming with a Boxer Rebellion game at CoastCon many years ago.

Lori and Christy,

I've played more Sword and Flame games than I can count and that doesn't include the many variants he produced. He was a Marine, war gamer, father and friend. His contributions to our hobby are endless. He'll be sorely missed. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Larry Brom more than anyone else popularized the Colonial period as a major genre of miniatures gaming through his classic rules set. Many of us owe him a debt of gratitude for the many the hours of enjoyment his work has provided, and continues to provide. Thank you, Larry Brom, and God bless you on your journey.

My first convention was Cowpens 1997. I had just moved to the usa.
I stopped by a table and played with Larry and George Carr Sr. I had just met two great gamers and they became two friends I enjoyed seeing at conventions.
I am really sad to learn that Larry joined George. It was an honor to know you.
RIP Larry. Semper Fi.
Lori and Christy, you are in my prayers.

His rules has some interesting innovations, using playing cards as I remember

SgtGuinness07 Nov 2015 1:09 p.m. PST

We prepared for CBV with the anticipation of fun and excitement only to be subdued and depressed by the passing of Larry. Upon arrival to the Con I received big hugs from my friends, Larry's daughters, Lori and Christy. They raised all of our spirits and instead of a funk hanging over the con we are celebrating his life by doing exactly what he loved, playing Wargames, rolling dice, and hanging out with close friends. He will always be remembered and be with us while we play his games.

As one of my close friends has said: "Rest easy Marine, you are relieved".

SgtGuiness, I am glad to hear that it turned out that way. Larry would have wanted it that way. I kept thinking about all of you who got to attend this weekend and wondered how everyone was holding up. It had to have been hard, I think I would have broken down. Glad that it was a celebration of his life and all he has given us.

He will always be one of the wargaming greats. This saddens me very much. The Sword & the Flame were one of the first mini games that I ever played. I played in his games at Historicon every chance that I got. He gave me a Brom Cross for one of them. It will always be a cherished possession. You should be very proud of him. I'm happy to have known him.

mrkprkr19 Nov 2015 12:46 a.m. PST

Rest in peace Larry. You were one of the giants of our hobby.
