"Heneral Luna" was a smash hit in the Philippines and will be an entry for the 2016 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It's also, in my opinion, a very entertaining film. General Antonio Luna is a great main character, full of fire and energy.

Trailer:

a behind-the-scenes video with the military history consultants (it doesn't go in-depth, but it does talk a little about uniforms & military strategy):

As the video suggests, a major problem facing General Luna is what a disciplinary and organizational mess the army is, having been formed out of various local/regional revolutionary cells that had been fighting against the Spanish.
(General Luna: "Do X."
Other General: "We're the same rank, you can't tell me what to do."
General Luna: "The president made me supreme chief of the armed forces, you have to do what I say."
Other General: "I only obey the president. Come back when you've got a written order from him that says I need to do X."
General Luna: "FFFFFFUUUUUU--")

In the U.S., "Heneral Luna" has been showing in New York since October 30 and will open in Los Angeles and other markets on November 6. Apparently the NY showing is in AMC Empire 25, and there are NJ showings in AMC Loews Jersey Gardens 20 and Bow Tie Bergenfield Cinemas. I don't see any information on the future showings in LA or what the "other markets" will be.

Thanx for the info about the movie. I've enjoyed Sayles' "Amigo" and I will see this one, without a doubt.

Hope you enjoy it! :) And thanks for mentioning "Amigo," somehow I hadn't heard of it before. Must look for it now.

BTW, I forgot to mention--if anyone is raising their eyebrows over that one-man horseback charge in the trailer…don't worry, the whole point of the scene is that the charge looks inspiring to the inexperienced soldiers under his command, but Luna himself knows that it was a crazy suicidal move and he only survived it by sheer dumb luck.

Looks like a good film. I'm hoping it is shown at the local arthouse theater that often has foreign films. The might get Heneral Luna since they are willing to even have movies with a narrow fan base such as the reboot of Ghost in the Shell.
