So should I finish my bugs in gloss or matte?
They will be glossy for the Colonial Barracks but do I want to give them a coat of matte over everything-since I finally did flock a whole bunch of them! Pictures to come this weekend! |

These critters are definitely hard shells! |

They're crying out for Windsor and Newton nut brown ink. That'll give more contrast and a shine. Maybe more gloss on that. |

There's also Satin finish for the best of both worlds. |

Best 'Nids I ever saw were cockroach brown and gloss coated. I didn't want to touch them! |

Agree about trying a dark wash before final overcoating. |

The cockroach that I found when I took the cover off the bbq last night was definitely glossy. |

Turtle Wax them for a real shine! |

Either way, though a near-gloss satin is appropriate for very smooth of the creature variety. On the other other other hand, spurs, spines, setae, and sensilla can make the arthropod look positively furry. As an exercise for four hands, I'd have to point out these aren't Terran 'bugs', are they. Doug |

Hah Dropzone. I saw your pics before any reading and thought 'Gosh! They're creepy, lifelike and cool'. Then I read on. Eeww. Halloween was last week… I wish we got bugs that big around these parts. |

Much better: just somehow more organic. |
