1:72 Scale.

"Flower Class corvettes are famed for their service in the Battle of the North Atlantic, though they were used in all theatres of action in World War II. Combat improvements as the war progressed included radar, better anti-aircraft guns, plus deadlier anti-submarine weapons such as the Hedgehog system…"

Anyone who has not had the pleasure of reading "The Cruel Sea" by Nicolas Monsarrat should do so.

I have this model sitting on a shelf in my garage still unassembled. It must be 15 years old. Some day I should sell it to someone who'd appreciate it.

Nice model but a bear to get right and accurate. It was originally done by Matchbox (which had an "interesting" rep re: the ease of construction!). Also had one for a long time. Finally sold it off when I realized I'd never get around to building it to the level I wanted.

I still have mine (unbuilt) from when I was a child on holidays with my parents and we stopped into a grocery store and they had a table FULL of these kits for very cheap – I actually (and thankfully) convinced my mother to get me one.

I love(d) Matchbox kits as a kid – the ease of putting them together was so much nicer than Airfix (and Esci). I knew as soon as I had seen it that it would be awesome!!!

I was overwhelmed, a bit, at the time with all the details and parts so I put it aside knowing, even then, I could not do the kit justice.

The photo etched accessories and details look very good on it. One of these days I will have to build it … (then I'd have to have a place to display it …).

Imagine that bridge in the N.Atlantic in winter…..

My Dad was exec on HMCS Bittersweet. He had many stories. The ones that involved being on the bridge in the North Atlantic in winter weren't the worst ones. Imagine an escort squadron of 3 ships convoying 150 merchant vessels to the western mid-ocean meeting point on radar alone, and not seeing another vessel because of the fog.

My son David built that model for Dad's 80th birthday present. It sat proudly in his living room until he passed away last January, a month shy of 96.

If you have access, the Flower I built and took Most Popular with at the 2011 IPMS Nationals is on the cover of FineScale Modeler, April 2012.

I used the Great Little Ships photoetch sets and a lot of scratch building. The only thing original to the finished model was the basic hull.
