Some of you may know I am doing 40mm SYW Prussian and Austrian armies. I've hit a roadblock with grenzers and nobody makes decent Grenzers. This led to to look for Austrian skirmishers in tricornes and on kronoskaf I came across: Silesian or Beck's Volunteers (1 BTN) Has anybody any details about their uniform? Any help greatly appreciated. link Thanks Nigel |

I found this TMP thread TMP link and this picture:
It shows Beck's chaps on the bottom line. But what colour is that coat (with yellow facings). My guess is green but does anybody know for sure? |

Summerfield gives a unit of Von Beck/Von Böck, raised from Silesian deserters from Prussian service; dark green coat with light green waistcoat. Light green turnbacks and yellow lapels and cuffs. Also shows yellow turnbacks as a possibility. |

Yes thank you – it must be the same unit as the Beck unit in the picture as it is also titled Silesian Volunteers. Some small uniform differences but there cannot be too many units in dark green and yellow running around! Cheers. |

Nigel, Beck's volontaires should be a good choice. The colours you supply with that afore sheet are really a bit off. I had a look at my Albertina manuscript illustrations. The reproduction of the colour shades is very good in this book. It illustrates a soldier of the Loudon grenadiers and a Beck Fuselier. Comparing the two: both have the same typical Austrian cut uniform but both come with longish side arms – not quite as long as the Hungarian infantry sabers. Loudon has a rather light green coat, vest, and breeches (very different from the Mollo dark green) The Beck fusilier comes with similar light green vest, breeches, and turnbacks, but with a much darker green coat. Not so dark as the British rifles napoleonic evergreen shade. The facings of this unit should be paille, not yellow or light green. Cuffs and laples are in paille for sure. I can scan the images and send the m to you if you like. Cheers, Christian crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.com |

Christian, Yes please. Ioannis has sent me the Ottenfeld plate which is useful but it shows the same green for both Beck and Loudon. Cheers Nigel |

Von Beck should be dark green. You have a very poor reproduction of the plates there. This is better covered in Austrian Infantry of the 7YW, 2nd revised edition. Stephen |
