Trying to wrap my head around German air assets used for naval purposes during WW2. What this is heading towards is an OB for a campaign game. So, all flying boats would be assigned to the Navy, the problem is the regular bombers and patrol planes. FliegerKorps X was maritime focused until Hitler took over Greece, with about 160 planes primarily JU88's and HE111's, There was Fliegerführer Atlantik with another 150-ish aircraft. All I could find online kind of tapers off after 1941. Does anyone have any good references?

If you can find copies of the following volumes from the Luftwaffe Colours series.

Seeflieger.Luftwaffe Maritime Aircraft and Units 1935-1945 By Adam Thompson

Sea Eagles Vol 1 – Luftwaffe Anti-shipping units 1939-1941 and
Sea Eagles Vol 2 – Luftwaffe Anti-Shipping Units 1942-45 by Chris Goss

They should give you most of what you want and lots of eye candy to boot.

There was no independent naval air arm in the German navy, which caused many problems. The Luftwaffe even demanded that it control the aircraft assigned to the German carriers (if they had ever been finished). Since every other major naval air power (the British navy just got air independence before WW2)this was a recipe for disaster.

The Condor was a civilian airliner re purposed for naval interdiction. What would have happened if a real 4 engine long range maritime bomber had been built.

How about German CVEs operating out of range of land based escort. Yes, they could be hunted down but with the small British carriers flying biplanes how long would it have taken and at what cost.

Ugh, $80 USD a book, a little much for some casual research.

Jeez that's steep, even though they are good books. Hmm let me look at something and get back to you.

Thanks. Like I said, the flying boats are pretty easy, but for example Wikipedia says Goring took all the Condors to resupply Stalingrad. The articles did say that some HE111's were equipped to use torpedoes, that might be a good indicator of marine use.
