I only assembled and painted European Mercs box. No problems with any of them, assembling or painting. They are even better than most of their metals from the same range, IMHO.

You can use them for any western European army of 1450-1520. For specific flavor you can use Perry metal heads that they sell separately. You can make them more Swiss or Italian/Spanish.

I have all the boxes. They are a lot of fun to put together and really great sculpts. I find that for the most part they go together really easily. Occasionally there will be a part that needs a little extra carving or seems fiddly to position, but really, it's mostly simple.

They do need some cleanup. The horses have a seam line down their backs. On the first batch I sanded them down and it was a real PITA. On this batch I've used Tamiya putty on the seam, then smoothed it over with plastic weld. Smells bad but it's fairly easy to work with.

On the mercs and wotr infantry there are a fair number of seam lines. Most of the bad ones are inside the legs, but they are quite noticeable on a painted figure. What I've ended up doing is priming the figure in light grey (Alclad through the airbrush is The Bomb when it comes to priming) and then cleaning them up. You can see the lines a lot better on a lighter surface. I clean them up using a mix of an X-acto knife and files made for smoothing plastic. I then cover them with a basecoat of black and paint from there.

The foot knights is the best of the bunch, are easy to put together, and require hardly any cleanup at all.

I'm using them for Venetians using Pete's flags. I'll start posting some pics of them on my blog soonish I hope. There's a great book about Venetian raids against the Ottomans in the 1470s I think that might give some inspiration:

I'm looking at these boxes of WoR plastics and trying to figure out what interesting project I could do with them.

They will work for pretty much any mid-to-late 15th century European army.

I would not go so far as to use the bulk of these beyond 1500, when the majority of western forces acquired some fashion from the Swiss/Landsknechts style.

They will probably work well for the Burgundian succession wars, fought mainly between Maximilian, still as duke of Burgund or later in the name of his son, France and French backed factions, various factions of Flandern, Brabant and Gueldern and later the Reichsheer (raised when Maximilian was captured by Brugges).
Of the Burgundian wars, the 1474/75 siege of Neuss and the clash with the Reichsheer of 75 would fit perfect, as you do not need tons of Swiss who are not that well represented by the plastics. The earlier war of the public weal will work well, and the fictive invasion of France by Charles and the English army (he did not appear because he was still before Neuss) in 75 is also an interesting scenario.

You will find that assembly needs some patience, but when combining the right heads and arms you can give units originally from the same set pretty different characteristics. I do consider this part of the creative phase, not something to get over with.

What other interesting fights could this stuff get into besides the WoR, Burgundian / Swiss Wars, etc?

In addition to those mentioned before, I would like to add:

- Very late Hundred Years War (e.g. Formigny 1450, Castillon 1453)
- Burgundians versus Low Country rebels
- Conquest of Bretagne by the French crown
- Bohemian war (1468-1478)
- Italian mercenaries in Constantinople (1453)
- Western European crusade agains Ottomans (planned for 1455 but never materialised)

Or for something bit further to the north, you could look for the conflicts between Sweden and Denmark.

I was thinking about using the Perry plastics for building a couple of Song of Ice and Fire themed armies… something of a departure from the regular historical battles. The figures should work well with livery painting. I was going to use Perry for Lannisters and Fireforge foot sergeant for Starks since they are not as technologically advanced. Still have not got around to actually starting yet.

Perry produces some Swiss and Italian-specific heads and other accessories in metal that you can purchase to convert these plastic kits even more. You can find them easily on their website.

I'm in the middle of gluing and painting these same figures, and the only mold lines I've had to deal with really are the one's mentioned on the horses. Nothing to speak of on the infantry, other than the making sure to smooth the spots where they connect to the sprue. There's an excellent variety of heads and poses that are possible, especially if you mix the WoR infantry and European Mercenary sets. I mixed in a few of the Italian heads too for the crossbows.

I struggled a bit trying to figure which army to make with them, but wound up settling on the Burgundian Ordonnance.

Burgundian Ordonannce – well documented and actually in battle, including English and Italian contingents. Good choice – now whom will tbey battle? The French, the city militias, the Germans at Neuss, the relieve Reichsheer, the Swiss (nominally even part of the Reichsaufgebot)?

Spoiled with choices. I REALLY hope the Perry give the late 15th century plastics the same set as their ACW. This will certainly multiply these armies…

Not sure what you mean by "the same set"?

Yep, that one. If they release a similar box with their late 15th century releases (and perhaps a medieval hut) there will be celebrations around here :-)

If you stick with MAA, pikes and archers you could field them as Scots too.

One box of HYW English will just about build a HYW DBA 3.0 army.

I've used mine for WOR historial armies, both sides of HYW.

Lannisters, Tyrells, Stannis.

And a Mallory inspired King Arthur Army for D3H2.

Now pondering some individual mounted figures for skirmish.

I've been using mine to make Conquistadors to go with the Foundry Conquistadors I have.

Again I ask. What is d3h2?

Thomas Thomas19 Feb 2019 3:15 p.m. PST

Sorry Deucey – its a combination of DBA 3.0 & Hordes of the Things 2.0 (so D3H2). It allows you to bring old HOTT up to DBA 3.0 standards.

Free to anyone who has purchased a copy of DBA 3.0 (helps to have some form of old HOTT).

Contact me at tomandkate@aol.com if you want a copy.
