Remember years ago someone said: "Lies, Big Lies and Statistics". According to the by Tango mentioned article "following a referendum in which more than 96 percent of residents voted to rejoin with Russia".
Relevant however is that NOT "96 percent of residents" voted, but a lot less. See: link

"The official result from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea was a 96.77 percent vote for integration of the region into the Russian Federation with an 83.1 percent voter turnout.[a][1] The Mejlis Deputy Chairman Akhtem Chiygoz stated that the actual turnout could not have exceeded 30–40 percent.[17] In an interview on 22 January 2015 Igor Strelkov admitted that his militia group coerced Crimean deputies to vote in favor of secession from Ukraine.[18]"

If Oxford University Press (and others) show the Crimea as part of the Russian Federation without any explanation about the peculiar circumstances that would not only be not scientific, it would even be supporting a bald Russian lie (which unfortuantely in this region is not the first nor the last one).
