"When fighting in close quarters combat, the posture which gives a warrior the best advantage is a necessary advantage. What better way to intimidate an enemy than throwing him off balance with an aggressive auditory clash to make him quake in his boots? Yelling as foreplay to a physical altercation is as old as War itself. Persian warriors in the epic Shahnameh had voices "like an enraged elephant" and voices "like a drum beat." In the Iliad, one character is literally named "Diomedes of the Loud War Cry."

It's now scientifically proven that screaming during physical activity increases energy and power and anecdotal evidence throughout history shows it has an significant effect on both sides of a battle. With that in mind, here are history's most legendary battle cries…"

Erinn go bragh!

Actually, probably the most effective cry was the one used by British Regiments in the Peninsular War after firing a very close range volley and counter attacking – simply described as 'a cheer'.

+1 for Tongs Ya Bas… guaranteed to strike a chill in anyone from Glasgow!

(and not "Tongs Ya Basingstoke" as the autocorrect on my phone amusingly changed it to…can't see that frightening many people!)

There's the Irish one 'Faugh A Ballagh' "Clear the Way" which is apt when a bunch of deranged, screaming Irishmen are bearing down on you :) and my all-time favourite "Whoa Muhammed" from the illustrious Paras which should wet the pants of any of their opponents.
Cheers and HOKA HAI!

D'oh, Zargon beat me to "Faugh A Ballagh".

"Libertad o muerte!" – Liberty or death!

And in honor of Tango – "Muerte a los salvajes unitarios!", Death to the savage Unitarians (look it up).

The old Hanoverians shouted "Gah-toe" (I forget the meaning in Low German), but the French wondered why they were shouting "Cake."

I've mentioned this before, but I never tire of it:

From Brett-James' _Ball of Fire: The Fifth Indian Division
in the Second World War_:

"At last light the Mahrattas set out with the utmost determination and vigour…[T]hese sturdy men, fully accoutred for battle as they were, scrambled eagerly up the boulder-strewn slopes towards the summit and the enemy. The Italians resisted stoutly, relying on hundreds of their little red bombs that they threw down on the Mahrattas. The combat raged. Amid the crash of bombs and shells and the crackling of machine-guns, the war-cry of the Mahrattas---'Shivaji ki jai!'---came, floating across the moonlit valley to where General Heath and Brigadier Messervy waited in the Battle Headquarters that had been established among rocks at the foot of Cameron Ridge."

That's a great war-cry, but wait!:

"The 2nd West Yorkshires, who had been brought forward ready to take advantage of any success gained by the 3/12th on Pimple, were quickly on the scene. Colonel Rodwell gathered his company and platoon officers and issued final orders. He drew attention to the spirited manner in which the Mahrattas had fought that night, undoubtedly urged on to white-heat passion by the utterance of their strange slogan, and he said, "We must have a war-cry. Can anyone suggest a suitable one?" A pause followed. At last a ranker platoon commander hesitantly murmured, "What about 'Fook, Fook,' sir?"

Always found Budget and Hertz much better value, if I'm honest.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned "Usuthu!" yet.

Overheard at the Little Big Horn: "See you, Injun – can your mammy sew? Get her tae stick an Apache on this."

I may be wrong, but didn't the anarchist during the Spanish Civil war shout something like "long live us" when they went into battle?

Oops, I mis-read the topic title as "The 8 Best War Crimes Of All Time, too. huh? (Might be a popular subject on a Klingon forum.)

"Zuuluu!" has always been a cool war cry. ;-)
