Hey so, I've recently bought a small unit of 16 hoplites from Magister Militum, which are perfect, all I need to do is paint them, can't wait.

So I'm planning on creating armies for different city states like, an army for Athens, Sparta, Corinth etc etc.

So far, I've looked at Magister Militum, Essex, Xyston and Old Glory, and Essex look a little worse quality than Magister, so I'm just going to stick with Magister Militum, but they don't have that many for hoplites as Essex for example.

So are there any other websites I can find good quality 15mm Hellenic soldiers? Casualties would be good too.

Also I tried Donnington, but I don't like how I must drill in holes for weapons, which I really can't do.

Bit annoying that you have to create an account to be able to look at the website Mike!
Xyston are lovely miniatures but need attaching spears and shields.

They look good Mike, I've already made an account and everything but whenever I go onto the Hellenistics it's just the new products for Ocotber, and when I press for all of the Hellenics, it just brings me back to the main page.

Any help?

And miniatures only please!

Forged in Battle have a great range of hoplites. I have both the Spartans and generic Greeks. Amazing detail and a decent price. They might be a big bigger than Essex.

Yeah Blackhat are nice.

Forged in Battle are top notch, they are doing monthly specials too, if they ever appear there I'd say at that price they're a steal.

Try Old Glory 15mm. They paint up real nice.

"Bit annoying that you have to create an account to be able to look at the website Mike!"

Just click on 'online shop' on the top bar of the Black Hat home page.
There a comment there that you don't need to create an account.

Once on the Hellenistics page, you see the new products but there is also another hotspot for 'Hellenistics'. Click on it and you get the full list. I assume this is because some other ranges have sub menus.

Old Glory and Xyston would be out as they have separate weapons.

I'd second Forged in Battle – nice figures and probably closer in size to Magister Militum than Museum. Black Hat are also good.

The AB Greeks are nice – link

You don't need to make an account to view the shop….

I'm not sure if this is a problem with Chrome on Android?

They all look really nice thanks!

But one thing, do the Black hat miniatures require for weapon holes to be drilled in and the weapons and shields to be glued on?

Mark RedLinePS13 Oct 2015 7:18 a.m. PST

Works now Mike, didn't yesterday on my iphone.

Oh Bugger13 Oct 2015 7:40 a.m. PST

No, Blackhat hoplite weapons and shields are cast on.

IUsedToBeSomeone13 Oct 2015 8:07 a.m. PST

Some of the hoplites are open handed so wire pikes wouldhave to be glued into them but they don't need drilling.

There appears to be a problem with the website at the moment which means that it is sometimes asking for you to login again and also logging you out when you hit checkout – ticket raised with my host…

thanks

Mike

IMO gluing on spears and shield is better in the end. No more snakey bendy spears. The premade ones with the leaf tip work great. Xyston are the best IMO. They have more varieties of hoplites than you can shake a long pointy stick at!

For the city states you could get several of their DBA army boxes – Athenian, Spartan, Thebans

Sadsad13 Oct 2015 8:30 a.m. PST

Thanks, I will check all these out thanks for the suggestions.

Any ideas for the first army?

I'm thinking Sparta or Corinth.

Swampster13 Oct 2015 10:26 a.m. PST

City choice might depend on whether the rules you are using make much difference between them. Sparta generally has the best quality. The remainder might be differentiated more by the choice of troops to go with the hoplites.
If you go early enough you probably wouldn't see much difference between the appearance of the different cities' troops. Later on they used more identifying blazons on shields. Helmet types may also have been more common in some places than others – Spartans with pilos helmets for instance.
