I'm looking to create some snazzy objective markers for my Greek mythology themed games using Pulp Alley or 7th Voyage. Here are the boxes I would like to tick:

1.) the figures I'm working with are 50mm (they are the Alternative Armies fellows)so rather on the bigger side would be a good thing

2.) not too expensive--$20 would probably be the ceiling, though I might go higher if the piece were particularly delectable

3.) not requiring huge amounts of effort. Scenics really aren't my strong point, so while I'm happy to do some painting, MINOR sculpting and basing, that's about it. If something is ready to use "out of the box" it would be great.

4.) atmospheric. I suppose you'd gathered that.

5.) not too big a footprint. Greek temples and that sort of thing are magnificent, but are too bulky for a marker. 2" square or smaller is about right.

Some initial ideas: a gleaming shield lying against a tree trunk, just like the scene in the original Clash of the Titans--I have some extra hoplite shields that I will prop against a stick stump with some terrain effects;

some vases would be great, but how to do them? I know beads have been used, but am having trouble finding the right sort. A trip to the craft store may be in order

statues would be about perfect. I've found these: link which could be good. I would cover up the name plates at the bottom, of course. The Otherworld Storm Giant could also fit the bill.

a Golden Fleece draped over a tree would be amazing but I'm not sure how to do it. The sculpted varieties are all for 28mm and so would look too diminutive for my larger heroes. This is where my weak craft skills fail me. I'd greatly appreciate any tips/ideas.

Altars or shrines could be excellent, but the scale problem could again be an issue.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. You get the idea. Any further tips would be greatly appreciated. If you know any, specific products would be especially helpful.

Thank you!

Crocodile Games golden fleece is one great thing, Reaper's Jars terrain piece with their bones line is also good.

Several minis painted as statues…especially ones like foundry's greek gods…imagine them being carted around to steal the favor of the gods or similar.

The easiest thing I can think of to craft that a Greek might go for is a tripod.

Check out Google images for Greek tripods--lots of them lacked polish.

Excellent tips, gentlemen, thank you. Crocodile Games is a good potential source, especially with the god-type figures. I love their fleece, but going by price alone, would guess it's too small for this project. Darn.

Whemever, I may just, JUST be able to sculpt a tripod out of fimo or greenstuff, so that's actually quite a good idea. It will probably turn out badly, lopsided or looking as though it was cast up by some drunken satyr, but that would actually strike my sense of humour a little. Or I could say it was one of Hephaestus' first efforts; the product of his second year or some such.

79th, that is an amazing lead, and exactly why I asked here--I was totally unaware of those. I can't thank you enough!

Herma, dude, herma. All you need is a rectangle of wood or what have you, a spare bearded head, and a little greenstuff for the additional decoration: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herma

A golden fleece over the branch of a tree could be relatively easily and cheaply constructed. Your garden could probably provide you with the tree – dried out ivy branches or the roots of a small shrub would provide a suitably gnarled tree. As for the fleece, suitably cut piece of towelling or face cloth, soak in watered down pva, then draped over the branch until dry. Maybe add some spiral beads for horns, paint it gold. Voila, one fleece.

My God. Mr. Ewing, this is an idea of genius. I can't believe I hadn't thought of it (I must be slipping). Not only is this within my sculpting capabilities (the Perrys had best watch out), but the gaming potential of this idea, in the right sort of crowd, is endless.

Thank you.

1/32nd scale Plastic Romans or Greeks make easy statues.

For inspiration, try Matakishi's site.

Here is a link.

Good luck.

That's why we're all here; glad I could be of some help.

You certainly were. All the Baueda items are ordered! Thanks again.

Foundry miniatures had a large Greek miniature line….w some scenics ( I think), but they're 28mm scale

I seem to recall Greek shield water slide transfers/decals ….I'll try and find them…..but putting a few together on a rack with some spears etc….could be a scenic objective?

Sash and saber castings are 40mm and they have Greeks which could be statues etc in their romanof ancients line

Good luck

Here's the tripod I bricolaged out of some household junk. Not sure about the scale, since I'm not sure how big they were in real life. But if the Pythia could sit in one while she was prophesying, some of them must have been large.

Gone Fishing14 Oct 2015 8:14 a.m. PST

That's really impressive, Whemever. I think you're right, that they came in all sorts of sizes ranging from small to quite large depending on their function, just as vases, amphorae and other such things did. Thank you for the inspiration!

I really appreciate all the ideas, gentlemen. This has been extremely helpful!

How about a golden bow or Hercules' club? The golden apples? Check through the Greek myths for items of this sort.

Gone Fishing14 Oct 2015 3:27 p.m. PST

I'm loving this. More excellent ideas--I especially like the club and golden apples, both of which could easily be represented even by my ham-fisted sculpting efforts. Thank you!

Godstorm RISK has some nice little temple pieces about an inch or two in base size, half an inch tall. You might pick these up cheap from a battered, used copy or even find a bag sold separately as replacement parts.

poiter5023 Oct 2015 7:21 p.m. PST

The temples are on Ebay in 12 piece lots.
