Washington's Immortals: The Untold Story of an Elite Regiment Who Changed the Course of the Revolution New book out (well at least to me) on the Maryland Regiment at the battle of Long Island. Should be great stuff but I have been disappointed before by poor writings and Evan worse research. Is this a rehash of the same old or something new and exciting that makes us want to paint new figures. Has anyone read this book? |

Kinda hard to have read a book that won't be released for another 6 months. But it does look interesting since the Maryland Regiment was one of the mainstays of the Continental Army. link Jim |

Given how many battles and Continental Army units "changed the course of the Revolution" it makes you wonder how it took over eight years – and the help of the world's two main colonial superpowers – to win, doesn't it. |

I thought the Wyoming Massacre changed the course of the revolution. |

Kip's Bay. The speedy retreat of the militia convinced Howe that he could never prevail. |

Kinda hard to have read a book that won't be released for another 6 months. The Amazon page has a number of 'endorsements'/reviews including one by Don Hagist for whom I have nothing but respect. "Through a long war that was frequently on the verge of disaster, soldiers from Maryland repeatedly played a pivotal role in the Continental army's narrow escapes and surprise victories. Washington's Immortals is a soldiers-eye view of the Marylanders who fought in the Revolution's most desperate clashes. O'Donnell weaves together first-hand accounts, many from archival sources never before published, to reveal the struggles and triumphs of this remarkable regiment and the men who were part of it."Don N. Pass the sour grapes, please. Well, it's not an unfair point. Sounds like it could be a very interesting book, bombastic title notwithstanding. |

Anyway, I thought it was those guys on "Turn" who changed the course of the AWI… :) |

Any brawl between two guys on the corner gets listed as the "decisive" battle of the war. Same thing for the Civil War. Don't let the title get you. One book, "Where the South Lost the Civil War", about Fort Donelson, was quite good. The author wanted a less pretentious title but the publisher insisted. |

The Marylanders chose the title themselves. They were so tough that they are still alive! |

Titles not withstanding, if it is anything like the book 'Fusiliers' in design and quality it will be well worth a read. |

Hopefully it will be another 'arrow in the quiver' of our knowledge on the subject. The original Maryland battalion 'grew' into seven continental regiments, which lost heavily at Camden, along with their Delaware companions and were reformed as the 1st Maryland Regiment that did so well under Greene, along with the two-company Delaware regiment. |

Titles of books, among other things when writing, are usually up to the publisher, hopefully with input from the author. |

Super's words: why his 'expertise' needs to be taken with a grain of "British" salt, his bias is clear. Okay by me if he has such – and, yeah, valid point, to a degree. But we did win, so if I may summon up my decorum-laced wit and offer a congenial response: Phhhhhhhhthttttttt!!!!!!!! oh, wait, sorry, here's a cloth to wipe away the spittle. |

Super Max has forgotten more about the AWI than most people will ever know. I suspect that comment was a bit of tongue in cheek. Or maybe he's just a sore loser? LOL LOL |
