A good 3D printed master starts with a good rendering. I worked with ancient CAD programs back in my college days, but I'm looking for a good program for rendering 15mm historical subjects. Ideally a program with good online tutorials or that is fairly intuitive. Does anyone have some good recommendations?

Blender is free:
blender.org

I played with it a while back, so I can't comment on the current version. There is a tutorial and user manual on the support page.

I found blender tough to get into but then all the 3d CAD programs seem counterintuitive to me.

There's also tinkercad, used in some schools to teach kids (saw that one at a convention, never used it).

Sketchup is the only one I could make any sense of.

Blender is very good. It definitely has a learning curve, but is fairly powerful once you've learned the basics. I use it for all of my 3D printed products.

I use blender myself, but if your doing anything organic, I cannot put enough recommendation to getting a graphics tablet – So much more comfortable to work with in blenders Sculpt mode than a mouse….
