I was reading the old Recon RPG rules last night and it got me thinking about miniatures games where the player(s) run groups of mercenaries or their opponents. Recon has a campaign outline for games in a fictional version of Central America and Loas. Do any miniatures games cover something similar. I suppose there are rules like Force on Force that could be used, but I'm really looking for something more detailed in terms of a campaign or specifically those kinds of games. Perhaps something like AK47 Republic but with a different setting? Thanks for any suggestions. |

I don't know if they have a campaign element or not but Spectre Miniatures has developed a set of rules for its modern range, which seems to be focused on spec ops types. |

Hi Mike. Thanks for the tip. No campaign rules that I can see, but I wasn't aware of the rules (and they are free!), so it's given me something interesting to have a read of! Cheers Chris |

The campaign rules in No End in Sight work well and fit in with the scenario generator so you can roll up a quick game if you are short of time or inspiration. |

Modern Ops by Pinnacle uses the Savage Worlds show down skirmish version of the rpg. Has mercs covered. |

Our "Warfare in the Age of Madness" rules would definitely fit the bill. It's a bit like "AK-47 Republic" for moderns. link The game include complete unit customization including vehicle design rules. You can field anything from a fairly conventional mech infantry force to light infantry and gear up anyway you like. The game also assumes factions are competing for something beyond "hold the bridge". Objectives, once captured, are removed from the battlefield and casualties even become objectives (you can strip the casualties for gear essentially). |

AK-47 itself has mercenaries, doesn't it? |

I suspect it does. Been a while since I've looked at them, but they are heavily predominant in the Peter Pig 15mm figure range to go with them. Seems to me it would be easy to adjust AK-47 to other theaters, e.g. the Middle East, Central or South America, the Caribbean, etc. Many of the faction types would remain the same. |

Thanks for the additional ideas. Visceral: Your rules look like great fun. I love the army lists on your website. I'll be looking into these more! Boy Wundyr/Mako11: I ended up buying the PDF copy of the older edition, which I got yesterday. Some factions can recruit mercenary types, but there is no specific merc type of list. On the other hand, Mako seems to be right about adjusting it to other settings. Shouldn't be too hard to run the kind of games I want. I'll probably look to RPG type material for the campaign side of things. Thanks all! |
