I should also mention that he was never referred to as "Alexander the Great" during his lifetime. This title was developed by Ptolemy 40 years later when he wanted to justify his position in Egypt.

One way of expanding upon what's already been said is to remind ourselves that until the last century or so conquerors were generally admired as conquerors, even if they were otherwise unpalateable. Alexander was admired as a great conqueror, and still is; we no longer admire conquest in the same way, however.
