I`m attempting to add general`s ratings to my C19th rules variants – right now, in particular I`m looking to the following wars:
The Hungarian Uprising 1848-49, The 1st Italian War of Independence 1848-49 & The 1st Schleswig-Holstein War 1848–51.
So, do any generals in these conflicts stand out for you as much better, or worse that the rest?
I`ll be trying to get down to brigade-level if I can, but any help with divisional commanders` abilities would be appreciated !

Weren't the Hungarian generals hanged by the Austrians after the Uprising -bastards…
Irrelevant to the question of course.

Weren't the Hungarian generals hanged by the Austrians after the Uprising -bastards…
Irrelevant to the question of course.

Many were. In fact, Austrian officers toasted each other with beer when each Hungarian was hung or shot. Even today, any number of Hungarians refuse to drink beer for that reason.

The Hungarian Uprising 1848-49, The 1st Italian War of Independence 1848-49

Stand-outs on the Austrian Side:

FML Count Franz Schlick: One eyed, he was a very good corps commander
FML Radesky of course.
FML Wrbna was also a good Corps commander.
FM Hynau: He was competent but ruthless. Infamous as a stand-out.

Few terrible officers, mostly competent, but few stand-outs. Fedlmarschcall-Lieutenant Jellacic was Okay, but rather uneven in his performance. FM Windisch-Grätz nearly won the war and then was badly beaten by Hungarians and replaced.

Hungarian stand outs:
Major-General Artúr Görei
Major-General Georg Klapka
Major-General Johann Damjenich
Major-General Bem

Really bad generals:
Corps Major-General Gáspár
General Dembowiski The Polish General who seemed only capable of losing battles stupidly, yet placed in command more than once… because Görei was too good and seen as a political threat.

Thanks Bill,
I had hoped to get some ratings worked out for brigade-level generals too – this is probably easier for the smaller Hungarian army, but I think I will have to do what I`ve done previously and if the information is not there to be had, simply rate generals of brigade the same as their divisional generals.
For the purposes of individual initiatives and in Grand Manoeuvre game terms that would be modified slightly as the opportunity and tendency to make individual decisions diminishes the further down the chain of command one goes.

Sure:

Here is the OOB for the main Austrian and Hungarian Armies about mid-way through the war. I have rated generals Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor. So there are your brigade-level officers too. Unless noted, the brigade officers are 'fair' quality. I noted excellent brigade officers as 'elite' just to confuse the issue.
At this point, all 'grades' are just my opinion.

Thanks Bill,

Did you do this for a game/campaign ?

I also found that some of George Nazfiger`s OOB`s had
generals rated too!

Mike.

MichaelCollinsHimself12 Oct 2015 12:02 p.m. PST

Having added some to my lists that`s filled quite a number of gaps and confirmed some of my own estimations. I`ll be modifying my own ratings in a comparison to yours of course Bill.

At the moment, I`m working through an order of battle for Novara checking Austrian generals to see if there`s anyone remarkable there.

MichaelCollinsHimself14 Oct 2015 3:21 a.m. PST

Making some progress now with the Hungarians, but I think I may have to base most (Austrian) brigade generals ratings on their divisional generals` ones after all – it`s very hard to find information regarding them.
I`ll be trying to find some info on the Russian commanders in the Hungarian Uprising later today…

Mike:
Yes, most of the Nazfiger's OOBs for the Hungarian war are mine. I traded them for other OOBs. wink

I have a couple of Russian accounts of their Hungarian campaign, but as far as I can tell, in most cases beyond Pantin, Bem and othe Hungarian officers consistantly outgeneraled the Russians. The Russians had a lot of respect for the Hungarians by the end of the war.

Did you do this for a game/campaign ?

I am building the armies at the moment. I have put together a 54mm set of units for BC and V&B.

Bill

MichaelCollinsHimself14 Oct 2015 11:16 p.m. PST

Ahhh… mystery solved Bill!

Did I see your Hungarian figures on a thread here a while back?…

Re. Russian and Austrian less-known brigade-generals, I`ll have a die roll for their abilities similar Grand Manoeuvre`s dicing for different Napoleonic nations` generals.

Mike.

Yes, 54mm Hussars. I have been experimenting with conversions that would be necessary here and there for 15mm armies while creating some troops to play using BC, V&B and GA. [Far cheaper…]

Thanks. It is a spectacular war. Large and small battles. The Hungarian uniforms are beautiful. Their army has nothing but Hussars and Lancers in their cavalry, cannon's painted red, white and green. [Even some of the Austrian artillery painted their carriages with black, red and yellow stripes]. Their infantry all piped and corded like hussars…

Now to create a set of 15mm or 28mm armies….
