According to most reports, this is the best guesstimate of the Loyalist regular troops at Kings Mountain. King's American Regiment (Captain Abraham DePeyster, New York): 22 Loyal American Regiment (New York): 18 New Jersey Volunteers (Captain Samuel Ryerson, New Jersey): 57 Prince of Wales American Regiment (New York): 18 Am I correct in assuming that all of these regulars would be wearing red faced blue uniforms? Or were there other facings?

Bill, Troiani has the Prince of Wales guys in a rather fetching green and dark blue coat (like the Emmerich Chasseurs). I'm not saying that's what they wore ay King's Mountain, but it gives you (and me) an excuse for some variety. link Giles |

If I remember correctly, only the British commander at Kings Mt was wearing a red coat. One reason he was such a target of choice. |

I thought Ferguson had a hunting shirt on, but he was mounted. |

At my usual 1/5 figure scale for TSATF that's 23 figures. Quite manageable I would think. With some of Bill's figures of course. |

There are actually 2 Ferguson figures available in 28mm if you assume he is a mounted officer wearing a Highland bonnet. Bill makes one and Old Glory another. |

I seem to recall Ferguson described as wearing a plaid shirt. |

I have a feeling that the KAR had olive green facings and the PoW American Regt greenish-blue (not all "royal" Loyalist regiments had the normal dark blue facings of the British Establishment); the Loyal Americans seem to have had buff facings. Officially, the New Jersey Volunteers had green coats faced white for 1777, red coats in 1778, but reverted to green coats with prominent white buttonhole lace in 1779. However, their 1780 uniform was red coat faced dark blue, with white buttonhole lace that indicated the battalion (buttons in 1s, 2s, or 3s). Whether this was the uniform worn by their light bobs in the South has a slight question mark over it, because when the corps first went into red coats in 1778, it kept the original green coats for fatigue duties. Did it do that again in 1780, or was the 1780 clothing issed in time for the trip South? We're not sure. I don't have mine to hand, but if anyone has Rene Chartrand's Osprey MAA on the Loyalist corps they can confirm/correct. |

Furgeson was wearing a red checkered plaid shirt when he was killed. The OMM knew this fom a deserters description and marked him for death. He was hit numerous times and his foot became caught and his body was dragged around by his wounded horse. Brendan Yes, I have attempted to put together a listing of the facings and I am all over the place. The KAR illustration shows green, but other sources state blue since they were a royal unit. I think that I like the idea of the converged unit and will go with several facing colors.
What about white? Many of the ilustrations that I see show some Loyalists in white facing. Is that just speculation? |

It's quite possible that the KAR went to dark blue in the last year or so of the war when they were taken onto the American Establishment; I would go with green for 1780. Off-hand, I can't think of any Loyalist units wearing white facings with red coats, but it was quite a common colour when they had the early-war green uniforms. |

I hate Pinterest. It won't allow me to copy the photo to my AWI Uniform file. Everyone please don't post there. No, I don't want to sign up. I will see if I can find them on Image Bank or Don Troiani website. |

Brendan, Going with the olive green for the KAR with some blue facings for the Jersey boys. I have Chartrand's book and ended up more confused than when I started. Most studies place the number of Loyalist regulars at 110-140. Green and blue are in. I may pick one more facing color if I can justify it. How about the NJ Vols? They seem to have the most representation. |

I remember last time I was at Kings Mountain, the video they play there claimed 120 red coated loyalists, but it is an older video so who knows. |

nevinsrip – sorry, I missed that you had posted again. I'd go with the buff, as that is a rare facing colour for Loyalists in red coats (although quite common in the older green). |
