"Turkey scrambled its fighter aircraft after a Russian warplane violated its airspace on 3 October, raising concerns over the potential for confrontation between NATO and Russian forces operating in Syria.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on 5 October saying that two of the country's Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons were scrambled after an unspecified Russian aircraft entered its airspace south of the Yayladagi/Hatay region, near the Syrian border. According to the ministry, the Russian aircraft departed its airspace after it was intercepted.

Turkey has protested the violation to the Russian government, with the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Ankara being summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The acting undersecretary of the ministry "strongly protested this violation, demanded that any such violation not be repeated, and affirmed that, otherwise, the Russian Federation will be responsible for any undesired incident that may occur", the statement read…"
