What do foreigners think of the United States? Foreign observers and travelers are rarely indifferent to American culture and people. This course examines historical and contemporary views of America held by Chinese, Mexican, French, and multiple African nationals. Join us to examine the multiple perspectives of America through foreign eyes.

The United States has always been a source of fascination— both attraction and repulsion — for the people of France, Mexico, China, and African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Sudan. America Through Foreign Eyes is a rich, interdisciplinary, international course that features Rice faculty from a variety of disciplines and area studies. Focused on perceptions of America abroad, the course is a cross between World Cultures and American Studies. The course features four main segments, each covering the perceptions and interactions of particular regions with America, Americans and Americanization.

All you have to do is listen to what many say about the US on this site … evil grin You don't have to take a course … wink

Unfortunately those that are most likely to take such a course are not the ones who should be taking such a course.

So are you saying I'm dumb ? Or there are dumb people on TMP ? huh?

Skarper09 Oct 2015 7:10 a.m. PST

I'd hope most people on here would be aware how the US is viewed in many countries around the world and would also know why.

Legion – ignorance is a lack of knowledge, all of us are thus ignorant to varying degrees since none of us know everything.

Dumb is the person who is proud of their ignorance.*

Lack of capacity to learn is unfortunate, but lack of will to learn is just dumb.

* eg "I know what I know and nobody can tell me otherwise!"

Do the French care what the rest if the world thinks of them? Or the Russisns? Or Chinese? Or ISIS?
Not trying to pick a fight. Just curious.

Skarper10 Oct 2015 8:25 a.m. PST

The French do very much care what the rest of the world thinks of them. The French I knew when I lived there did anyway. Koreans care. Even Japanese care – though that is another can of worms.

So – yep. Not caring or even knowing while not unique to the United States of Amnesia is far from universal.

David in Coffs10 Oct 2015 2:50 p.m. PST

Everyone* cares what others think of them.
It is what brings out the best and worste in people.

* there are some who truly don't care – often sociopaths – which is why governance systems that support ir promote those types are not good for a healthy society.

Legion – no worries! :-)

What are friends for, if not too tell us what we need to know, even if we don't want to know.
