I'm new to AWI and looking for a few recoemdations on refernces to get me started. Any suggestions?

It would help if you were more specific. Uniform, tactics, organization, rules, historical background?

Bashytubits05 Oct 2015 11:20 a.m. PST

This is a good starting point.

Sorry, to be more specific tactics, organization, an small battles.

Thanks for the link.

By way of background I've read McCullough's 1776 but not much else.

Some have noted some errors on the Baccus uniform guide. It is always prudent to check more than one source.

I agree Rallynow, but the same could be said for almost any source. As you may know there are debates going on about whether the British Legion infantry wore red or green at Cowpens, and on what uniforms were worn by the Delaware Continentals in the southern campaign. We can't seem to agree on when the different highland regiments gave up their kilts and there have been a number of other uniform/clothing debates on this board.

I posted the Baccus site not because it is guaranteed to be accurate, but because it is a convenient starting point for a "newbie". Once he had gotten his feet wet our OP probably would want to move on to other sources, including the usual authors and whatever Troiani and Company of Military Historians information he can find on the internet.

Understandable and for a newbie will work to give some overall understanding of the variety of uniforms.

You could try the Black Powder supplement "Rebellion". It was written to be a general introduction to the war with a brief historical overview of events, descriptions of the armies and their organisation, discussion of tactics and lots of scenarios, many of fairly small battles.

Yes, I wrote it. No, I don't get royalties :-)

Oh, and there are lots of photos of painted figures to help further as a guide.

The Rebellion book has been quite useful as a starting point for me. I have read around the conflict and read Chris Hibbert's Redcoats and Rebels but had very little idea on the uniforms.

More in depth reading to come but like I said it has got me started the huge pile of Perry plastics that I need to paint up.
