I painted up a couple of built-up-areas for Spearhead this weekend. The bases are 3"x3". All models are GHQ. Basing materials are Vallejo fine pumice and some fine railroad ballast, both of which are a bit too chunky and/or rough for this scale.

Could easily have believed this was a 20mm diorama. Brilliant!

Cor! Very nice!!!

Try sandpaper for a rough grit effect? Easier to glue on as well?

ArkieGamer05 Oct 2015 6:02 a.m. PST

Thank you, gentlemen. Glad you enjoyed it!

Mr. BattlerBritain-I'll take a look at sandpaper-it might be just the thing, if the pattern isn't too regular. Thanks!

Super paint job on the houses and outbuildings, ArkieGamer. How did you achieve the effects on the walls?

Thank you.

They were painted with Vallejo Ivory and then given a wash of 80% sepia ink mixed with 20% black ink and a couple of drops of Future floor wax. The ink can be manipulated after it dries with a wet paintbrush. I panicked when I discovered this fact originally, but it has its uses!

The GHQ buildings, if you're not familiar with them, have a really nicely rendered texture that takes washes well.

Thanks. Yes, I am familiar with the GHQ buildings. They are a nice fit for 6mm models, being that bit smaller than other '6mm' manufacturers. I use them a lot for Great War Spearhead village and town sectors on the Western Front. Thank you for the information, which I will put to good use.

Why put in the future floor wax?

ArkieGamer07 Oct 2015 3:59 a.m. PST

It breaks surface tension and acts as a flow-aid, which leads me to realize I forgot to mention the critical fact that the wash has lots of water added…like 80%/20% water to ink.

Those look great Arkie! That is a really nice job! Have you done any others? We would love to see more photos!

No, I haven't but I will be before the end of the year (I hope). I'll be sure to send along pictures.

Thanks, and glad you liked them!
