Enjoyed finishing Hammer's Slammers: At Any Price tonight. Review on my blog. Recommended reading.

I've read a lot of military sci fi over the years, and am genuinely surprised that Drake doesn't get more kudos from the wider sf scene for this series. One of the best genre reads to be had.

Minor quibble – they are "blowers" (i.e. hovercraft) NOT grav tanks.

Well, The Slammers are mostly mechanized, but they do have infantry, on one man skimmers, and combat cars.

Read all of Drake's Slammer stories and novels. Liked them all …

Just FYI … The Slammer's are an Armored Cav unit. Loosely based on the unit Drake served with in Vietnam and Cambodia, the 11th Armored Cav Rgt. Which had M48 MBTs at the time, IIRC. Which are the M2 "Blower" Heavy BTs. Plus the 11th ACR had M113 APCs, the Armored Cav version known as ACAVs. Those are the M9 Combat Cars. And yes the Slammer Infantry rides on one man skimmers. Kind of like traditional Horse Cav. But more like Mounted Infantry, like the Aussie Light horse in WWI.

And yes, the Slammer AFVs are GEVs/ACVs not Grav …

I have all three Slammers collections on my Kindle, they cost $9 USD each from Amazon. I enjoy them but some of my friends are put off by Drake's rather bleak view of life in the future.

Blake, read "The Sharp End" (its in the 3rd collection book or can be bought separately). Its about a small Slammers survey team going to a planet to scope things out for a possible contract, little or no armor, mostly small unit stuff.

I'm a bit biased, but… read Drakes's Forlorn Hope as well: Slammerverse but not the Slammers themselves. An all infantry story.

I've also read 'em all.

I had one of his short story collections "All the way to the gallows" but left it on a train once – and now it's out of print.

Ebooks are rarely, if ever, out of print. David Drake collects royalties off of those sales, too, although I think he'll understand & forgive you if you hunt down a used copy. 😀
