Which miniatures ruleset would you recommend for playing scenarios involving WWII bombing missions?

Avalon Hill's B-17 was my favorite game of bombers.

Well, I have to say we have run a 100 bomber mission 4 times at Historicon in 1/300 scale using CY6!

Was on two big tables w escorts and attacking fighters able to move from table to table while the bombers remained stationary (well, we moved the fighters back at the start of each turn to represent the bomber formations move).

What a blast.

Check your six for up to a dozen or so 1/300 (or 1/600) big bombers at altitude has worked for us over a couple enjoyable hours, with half a dozen fighters on either side.

It also works well for waves of little fighter bombers doing low level attacks against ships/bridges/hard targets, and some cap.

Some of the early war missions with dreadful hopeless bombers are quite interesting. I'm looking at you, Fairey Battles. Also, you get to say this week you are going to fight Fairey Battles, and everyone assumes something entirely different.

The Blue Skies series details bomber damage down to crew positions.

I'm a big fan of Blue Skies or Luftwaffe 46 for bomber-centric games – they're designed to play pretty quickly with big forces, so accommodate that sort of game readily in a way that most rules can't.

CY6 is great for big battles if you have lots of players (as its order system means several people can get on with what they're doing simultaneously) but for a 1 on 1 game it gets too slow when using large numbers of aircraft. (Effectively most systems have a maximum number of planes beyond which things just get too slow, but in CY6 it's the number of planes *per player* that's key, so the more players you have, the bigger the battle it can comfortably handle.)

Doesn't Wings AT War (Not WOW) have a rule set for WW2 Battles with bombers and fighters over Germany around circa 1944?

I did not find it at my book marked page link web site doesn't show it (newer?)

Good point – oddly I haven't actually tried that one yet – must rectify that some time. :-)
