We played our first game with these rules and enjoyed them a lot. I haven't seen many reviews that really discuss the mechanics of the rules in detail, so I made an effort to do that, including a step by step walk through of the last player turn of the game.

Too bad this fine set of rules is not played at US conventions. |

Great looking game, Peter! Hi Dan, I believe it has been played at some US conventions; there is also talk of a big Clontarf display game in the spring. An early prototype of the horse and musket version recently had an outing at Recruits in Kansas. Best, Simon |

Splendid rules, They really do handle the maniple system better than any other rule set I have encountered. Great write up! The asinine Centricus should have known better than fight Hannibal on open ground. I myself prefer to employ Fabian tactics against Carthaginian armies…in that I sneak out the back before the game begins and enjoy pint at the nearest pub. |

I agree, the special mechanism Simon has used for the Manipular armies is elegant; with more practice the Roman player should be able to make better use of manipular tactics. I suspect Centricus was feeling that open ground was a good thing for Rome – no place for Hannibal to place one of his dreaded ambushes! <Of course, in fact it was laziness on the part of the host (moi), feeling that dealing with the rules for terrain set up and battlefield effects might be more than we wanted for a fairly sizable first game!> |

Some people find the single-hit nature of the small Roman units in TtS! a bit scary, but the depth of the line (4 ranks of units) gives it a lot of resilience. The organisation is described here: link |

QC – glad you found it helpful. I definitely need to play again soon, probably with a different pair of armies. |

Very detailed and helpful. I plan on some solo Biblical encounters. |
