I've been working on this Command Base for King Harold in the background whilst painting up Huscarls for the demo.

You can see more pics and read all about it on my Just Add Water Blog here:

Excellent. That is a Caldbec hill piece, alright. Of course, it could also have been typical of the top of "battle hill", aka as Senlac, before they carted off the top "half" of it – rocks and all – to make the abbey….

Beautiful, the basework sets it off a treat.

have you settled on a ruleset yet for the demo? just curious.

Splendid!

I'm thinking of using Soldiers of God Stuart with some modifications. Works well as the Ceorls get the opportunity to support the Huscarls/Thegns and actually contribute to melee which is exactly the sort of mechanism I was looking for and now I've found it!

interesting choice.

i have not really looked into those rules as they did not seem to easily convert into dark ages.

for my own hastings, i go back and forth between Hail Caesar and Sword and Spear. i'm leaning toward HC for the reason you suggest, that the ceorls can support the thegns by adding support dice and soaking up hits.

Harold's last words?
'I spy with my little eye something beginning with 'A'….'

Thanks guys :>)

interesting choice.

i have not really looked into those rules as they did not seem to easily convert into dark ages.

They are worth a look and are simple enough to run as a demo game (often with people who aren't too familiar with the rules) and they also have a very good period feel. OK, they are for the Crusades (should be easily convertible) but I see that the author is working on an Early Medieval/Dark Ages set too.

I took some close ups this morning- some of them are at a 'funny' angle but I was using the macro and it was hard to get in to some of the nooks and crannies of the vignette!

Cheers,
Darrell.

You, sir, are clearly a madman. But hopefully a happy one! Your work is impressive. Working a camera, not so much. The danged things do not cooperate, do they! You wanted the figure in focus, and you kept getting the grass. Grr! But do the best you can with what you've got….

Lewisgunner30 Sep 2015 11:15 a.m. PST

Stunning fighting man!!

Atheling30 Sep 2015 11:31 p.m. PST

Thanks for all who passed on positive comments….. I need the encouragement as there's a long way to go :>)

Thanks for that.

Yeah.,, it was when I went in with the macro- unfortunately the angles that I had to hold the camera at were not conducive to your high standards :>)

Ahh, thanks for the imput on the rules. I'll wait until a dark age version comes out before looking to closely, as i don't really like converting too much. I converted Dux Britianiarum to dark ages, redid all the cards into vikings and later saxons and what not, and found it more work than it was worth.

though i have found that card based games do well at conventions, because the turn structure of playing cards keeps things moving.

I'm no whizz when it comes to converting rules but they're simple enough and should have the right flavour for the period with a bit of playtesting.

I hope you're right LOL :>)
