My plan for building colonial armies is to make three generic armies for the British and any other European nation: one early (~1825-1855)in red coats and shakos, one mid-century (~1855-1885) in red coats and pith helmets, and one late (1885-1905) in khaki with pith helmets. I finally finished my first early unit, here's a pic:

The left are Streletz Crimean British infantry with the "Cherrybottoms" from IMEX behind them, in the middle are Esci Zulu British with Streletz Egyptian (Turkish) artillery, on the right more ESCI British with HAT highlanders behind.

I've got some of the other imperial powers here and there, and Zulus, Boxers and Sudanese painted. I'm shooting for ~10 native units and 5 European per era. Button counters may not be too happy, but it'll do for the occasional casual game.

Sounds like fun. I love this scale and am collecting British and Pathans and will be adding various others, like Russians, as I get the itch. FYI, I have found the Newline Design 20mm Colonials fit in almost exactly with my HaT, Redbox, and Strelets plastics size wise.

I'm not much of a fan of plastics but you've hit the key point at the end. Ultimately, its all about play value and you've got it going on. Step forward and play.

Sprinkle liberally with pluck and dash, then your good to go!

Nice collection, nicely painted. Never thought to send my Crimean Brits on a colonial mission.

You can never have enough Pathans. There's a good 100,000 of them up in arms this year (1897) that I'm needing to deal with!

Button counters be damn! You've finished the makings of three armies there which is more then I have been able to do of late.

(I had 500 plastic Zulus for 25 years. Gave them to a friend who is actually using them.)

Great work.

I'm doing something similar – I painted my Esci British in red and khaki. My Hat highlanders are in red, khaki, and blue/gray for the Sudan. I've got my Strelets Crimean British infantry and light infantry for Indian Mutiny – uniforms very similar.

You can go crazy just trying to get it 'right'! I spend much more time worrying/planning than painting.
