You see something-a new set of figures,a movie, read a book, whatever gets the creative side going for a new project. However,as soon as you start mentally planning(you havent bought anything yet)the thoughts of the number of projects already going shuts the process down. How often do you "move along, nothing to see here" or succumb to the "ooh shiny"? Me,I have been having lots of ooh shineys lately, especially with Star Wars Armada.

Dynaman878917 Sep 2015 9:48 a.m. PST

I keep walking most (nearly all) of the time.

Martin Rapier17 Sep 2015 9:50 a.m. PST

I try to only have one project on the go at once, which makes it much easier to prioritise new activity. Small batch sizes, limited work in progress and all that other management theory stuff.

A planned backlog restricts th amount of ooh shiny. I appreciate this approach doesn't work for everyone.

45thdiv17 Sep 2015 9:55 a.m. PST

I can get pulled in by the new shiny toys Pretty easily. I have a core set of eras I game, but if a new figure looks very cool, I will buy it just for the enjoyment of painting a one off.

wminsing17 Sep 2015 10:07 a.m. PST

I walk on way more projects than I commit to; it's the only way to stay sane.

Just keep movin' forward!

One foot in front of the other – with an occasional side step

haywire17 Sep 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

I have been doing it more and more. Especially with kickstarters ion saying "I will wait for it to actually be finished."

Col Durnford17 Sep 2015 10:52 a.m. PST

Almost always. Mainly because I'm only filling in a piece/unit here and there as part of a lifetime of collecting.

I try to just keep walking and, as of late, I have been fairly successful. If I am really tempted, I figure out how much all of the figures will cost and how long it will take to paint them, or how much it will cost to have them painted. That generally puts the thought into remission.

Now that I'm older I realize that I will never finish what I already have. I have reduced my core periods and gave up believing that I am somehow a "collector" creating something valuable to anyone but me.

Within my core periods I still find some new things hard to resist and I know that some cool things will have a very short life on the market. (For example, I'm glad I got the Farpoint SF figures quickly.) But I keep walking a lot more now. Every so often I almost decide to buy some of the Gates of Antares figures, but then I remember I already have cooler stuff than that sitting in boxes.

I don't really buy things on impulse. I don't always have an exact plan of what I need to fill out a specific project, but I always have a core idea that I can build around.

I am sure the stimulus from all the shinies around plants the seeds for those things that will eventually become core ideas and then projects.

I'm getting better, only one outside-the-box purchase in each of the last two years. But there's an Old West project whispering in my ear…

Frequently I keep walking. Far easier than it used to be. Chalk ot up to wisdom I guess.

Who asked this joker17 Sep 2015 12:05 p.m. PST

All the time. I try to keep my figure purchases in line with existing projects rather than starting new ones. So I mostly keep walking.

Old Contemptibles17 Sep 2015 12:49 p.m. PST

I limp by.

The Beast Rampant17 Sep 2015 2:21 p.m. PST

I have been growing ever more cognizant of my lead/plastic/everything else-mountain. I am HIGHLY susceptible to the Ooh Shiny Virus, but I am getting better all the time.

Me,I have been having lots of ooh shineys lately, especially with Star Wars Armada.

I have been successfully passing my rally checks on that one so far- but boy, did it have me scared when that was released!

Inkpaduta17 Sep 2015 3:26 p.m. PST

Always failed when I was younger. Now, I am able to resist most of the urges to "buy it now!"

Russ Lockwood17 Sep 2015 3:50 p.m. PST

Often enough, but variety is also important enough to buy some test figures from time to time, or take a shot in the flea market.

Jefthing17 Sep 2015 4:11 p.m. PST

Very easy to walk on since I started clearing my loft and working through my model stash. I've finally realised I will never have time to build the Airfix Sunderland, do Arab-Israeli in 20mm, Pony Wars using Airfix Cowboys, Indians and wagon train as a base or Pacific aerial combat in 1/72.

jdpintex17 Sep 2015 4:29 p.m. PST

Walking is highly over rated. Stop, look, and buy is my philosophy.

Very similar to my wife's view re: purses.

I have actually completed several projects over the past year or so and I am trying to be rational in starting new ones

snurl117 Sep 2015 11:56 p.m. PST

I try hard to restrain myself, but…..

Jcfrog18 Sep 2015 1:49 a.m. PST

Get that heating impulse then….
Thinks £
Thinks time/ how many games?
Thinks space
Thinks. " pile of metal in waiting"
So… Stalwart discipline wins… Well ask again in a couple of years.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP18 Sep 2015 2:31 a.m. PST

I have maintained iron discipline the last year. No new projects and three have made significant progress to completion in the mean time. One involves thousands of figures.

Some Chicken18 Sep 2015 3:35 a.m. PST

First rule of retail activity: buy it when it's there or it will be gone when you come back. As a result I probably have as many incomplete projects in hibernation as active ones.

jambo118 Sep 2015 8:32 a.m. PST

I am all over the place, way too many projects on the go, but I am now trying to get my head together and focus on one project at a time.

By John 5418 Sep 2015 1:05 p.m. PST

I am currently selling off everything l have, so am buying nothing, its very refreshing, l have to say, but, after l've to my new location, I wonder how long this will last!

I've always been a walker. It takes a really "shiny" thing to make me stop. Even then I rarely bite….

Rudysnelson19 Sep 2015 3:26 p.m. PST

As a store, I too do the keep walking concept. You have too. You cannot carry everything that looks interesting. Maybe checkout the rules before you get miniatures.
I was carrying bolt action ww2 almost two years before the rules came out and got popular.
Some areas I definitely avoid such as collectable cards and RPGs since I already have enough dead stock and do not want as much as I see in some stores in these areas.

The G Dog Fezian19 Sep 2015 7:32 p.m. PST

I try to resist, but it can be hard.

Der Krieg Geist25 Sep 2015 3:17 a.m. PST

I see oooh shiny then I see the prices….ack. Then I think of the lead, resin and plastic Himalyas in the basement and just think " nothing to see here, move along……..already have more than enough to keep me happy and busy in this lifetime. ;)

jambo125 Sep 2015 9:48 a.m. PST

I am useless at starting new projects before old ones are even half finished, I wish I could walk away.
