As the title says, I'm looking for cars to use in a Man from U.N.C.L.E. game. The miniatures I'll be using are a mixture of predominately Crooked Dice and Copplestone 28mm figures. I'm looking for some 1960s American vehicles (a few cars and a van, something like that) that will look about right with these figures. But there are a few problems:

1, I'm in the United Kingdom and know pretty much nothing about US cars of the 1960s! ANY advice welcome.

2, Likewise, some suggestions may just be prohibitively expensive to get across the ocean. Please feel free to make those suggestions anyway.

3. (Not a problem) I am absolutely fine with getting battered die cast toy cars and getting them in front of an airbrush. Especially if they're cheap!

Thanks in advance for any help.

First choose your scale.

If you go the 1/55-1/50 route look at Disney's Cars line, most are nominally 1/55 and can look good with a repaint.

Agree with the first reply above…choose your scale
This is more visual than you may have experience with you can try 1/43 thru 1/55 and see what looks good to you.

For me, I like the look and price of 1/43 and since you are already in the UK…try this

carmodel.com

I have purchased a few times--and shipped to the US--nice enough since you pretty much get what you pay for

Actually I would recommend 1/64 scale. While they may be a little on the small side, they are way cheaper and much more readily available than the bigger scale and don't look too bad

Like 1/43 scale for cars and vans, had some smashing 1/50 scale ones, but they were random sport and police cars..

Depends if the cars are set dressing or functional… but after figures are based I kinda think the larger scale looks more right..

And as for finding them, boot fairs, flea markets, specialist sales such as collectors fairs and classified ads or local shops. All are ok. (Don't forget to look at dinged up models, or ones missing wheels or with broken windscreen, since these can be purchased as real cheap and used as wrecks, or even repaired with spare bits since you are not as interested in box quality as collectors..

Thanks guys. I think 1/43rd is the way to go. I won some 1/43rd cars at a seaside arcade a while back, and they look good with Heroclix but are all modern and British. Any suggestions as to iconic American cars of the period that just scream "1960s"?! As I said, I know nothing about cars and some of the websites out there are just bewildering! I've found one useful one, to be fair. Cheers.

For iconic cars screaming 1960 s.. Depends how 1960 s you are going to be, but a few brand new Cadillac deville, and Chevrolet corvette, and a Volkswagen, would give you a feel for the period, also remember that if you are doing the spy thriller genre the promotional material (product placement) would insist on streets filled with posh cars..

That would be my excuse… And as long as it's sixties, it's your game…

1958 Corvette Spider
1955 Chevy Bel Air
1957 Fairlane Skyliner
1963 Corvette Stingray
1960 Falcon Ranchero
1955 Nomad

I think these are all cars that have been in at least 1 spy movie---James Bond for sure

Thanks guys. This is the Man from U.N.C.L.E. Not Bond, so the budget may be a little lower, but I do appreciate all your assistance.

Delprado's magazine collectables has just come out with a new series of classic cars. It will presumably have some American cars.
Why don't you look up the series on IMCDB?

If you can find certain series of Jada Toys cars, their idea of 1/64 looks more like the 1/60 the papercraft publishers use for 28mm; theyre a little bigger. Also don't use the lowest end toys, as they often have this annoying Fast and Furious-esque habit of putting modern low-profile tyres with alloy big rims onto 50's land yachts and 60s/70s muscle, which looks silly, is anachronistic and I think looks like it would impede turning as the custom wheels end up too big for the outer edge of the wheel arch. The Lamborghini Countach is the oldest car I can think of that would look even remotely attractive with low-profiles, and it doesn't fit at all; it is so wrong in so many ways to put them on cars that look best with mags (or, in some cases according to those links, whitewalls.)
Also, Mustang, Impala, GTO Judge, and various Dodge and Ford pickups. Buick Riviera, Grand continental..
Mercury Cougar? Eliminator, even?
