Were they active in Japan?
were they "patriotic"?

The Axis Forum states the Yakuza brought back to Japan any money or valuables taken from conquered/occupied territories. They also participated heavily in the rape of Nanking. Some sources indicate they were considered part of the military during the war. Certainly, their actions were sanctioned by the Japanese government.

They participated in looting in China, and they were involved in the opium trade. They also rounded up workers for industry. I am not sure if they were paid per head they rounded up or how exactly it worked, but the organization received money and industry got workers. They were significantly weakened during the time period we would consider to be WWII because able bodied men weren't allowed to opt out of military service in order to be criminals. The Yakuza really came into their own in the aftermath of defeat, enabling them to rise in power, get involved in black market activities, etc., so they really rose from the ashes of WWII to become what they are today.

Given the Imperial Government operated I suspect they did what they were told

Organized crime does not do well when the government are organized criminals themselves

Gave em the finger? The little pinky one that is :+D
Hah I kills myself, no really. I'd think criminals do what they do in any society, so it'd be black market and anything for a price, same as UK,US and Nazi Germany at the time. But as 79th says afterwards when most of Japan was starving under US control they were 'networking' as they say.
Cheers, interesting post thanks (remember Black Rain? that movie showed a bit of the reason on why they did so well after the war)

Interesting Yakuza and Mafia both benefited from post war chaos.
