im planning on starting a ACW project in 10mm scale. As a newbie to the period I know absolutely nothing about the uniform colours. Can anyone point me in the direction of an idiots guide to painting ACW figures?

Go to baccus6mm.com and follow the 'Painting Guides' link. All the I do you need to get started. You'll also get lots of painted examples in the relevant 'Catalogue' section.

A can of grey and a can of blue spray paint, then what I call the S.O.S. painting method. A bunch of dots for the faces canteens, hats and a bunch of dashes for the belts blankets and guns. I painted 1,000 in a month last time I did 10mm. Mount about 10 on a popsicle stick and paint them all the same, then mix them in with others to form a unit. I think it is the best scale to do ACW in. In that scale the paint jobs really aren't noticeable, it is the mass that you are looking for.
Good luck wit the project.

The guide from Histoire & Collections is an absolute gem – besides uni colors it shows equipment, etc. And covers more than simple blue and gray. Worth every penny and a super bargain at $20 USD

Look at the online catalogs of the painters Don Troiani and Keith Rocco.

Regarding link from major B.
It is an excellent good start.
Pls be advise, latest research indicated only a few rebel troops had the light blue paints. Most from capture.
You best stay with grey or grey with some browns/tans to reflect the fact that paints wore out faster than the jackets, so civilian wear was in place ( browns and tans) until the new issue of uniforms.
I recently purchased Don Troiani civil war series.

It is a good source.
I too am looking to start 10mm ACW.
Good luck and keep posting on your progress.
