…Best Definition Of War. "Throughout the summer of 1864, Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman commanded three Union armies in a series of battles across northwest Georgia with Atlanta as the objective. On Sept. 1, the Confederate army evacuated Atlanta, and the Union occupied the city the following day. On Sept. 11, the mayor of Atlanta, James M. Calhoun, and several city councilmen sent a letter to Sherman, begging mercy for the city and detailing the suffering of the civilian population facing evacuation. Basically he was saying you screwed up by supporting the wrong side. Then by making armaments and supplying the rebel army you have even less reason to expect mercy when I occupy your city. It's easy to support a war when it is far away and others suffer, but when it comes to your doorstep it is a lot harder. |
